Not sure if this is new with 1.7.3 or not, I built a brick fireplace around my 3 blocks of netherrack completely enclosing it, top bottom back and sides. Front is enclosed with glass. Directly above the netherrack is two blocks of air, then a block of brick. Above that is my wall made of wood half-slab. The wall goes two blocks, then atop that is my pitched, cathedral roof made of wood stairs. The roof/stairs start six blocks above the burning netherrack.
Somehow the stairs on the roof keep catching fire. Six blocks away?
And also, the reason I use half-slabs of wood instead of a single block of wood planks is because the use of two half-slabs to make one wood plank block rendered the blocks immune to fire. But once the roof catches fire, the double-half-slab blocks are burning too.
Has the half-slab immunity to fire been changed in 1.7.3?
And why is my roof catching fire six blocks above burning netherrack?
LoL your house on fire!!!
im jk...my house does this all the time and i have yet to find out the problem...
So my way of fixing things is not putting Lava/Fire in my wood projects.
Try Stone! it keeps Lava from catchin my wool on fire.
Yet i don't know if this will help you.
I have 2 houses in my world with wooden slabs and after the update they are still not catching on fire. The full house is made out of wood too. Add me on xbox: Tru3 Shots, if you want me to look at it or show you how I built mine.
I'm pretty sure six blocks away is a safe distance anyways, just be sure you don't have any left over wooden planks laying around. Also, what type of floor do you have?
Not to sure if double'ing slabs keeps wood resistant to fire. (they disappear) Double up slabs and grab flint... I think you notice fire. I like fire....
Except in my wooden home.
Slabs alone will not catch fire, doubling reverts them back to wood as a fire property... Which is stupid since if you use anything but a pick, you loose the blocks.
Fire reaches four blocks above I believe and two blocks out.. Could be wrong. Fire places in wooden homes just aren't a good idea. I made this mistake myself. Was funny at first. Tried to fire proofing, and failed. Ended up just getting rid of it. Either that, replace the wood.
You need to make sure that the netherack is not touching anything other then stone. that means if you have 1 netherack block in place. Under it is a 3x3 stone/cobblestone blocks that is centered on the netherack block and then on the same level as the netherack block is also stone/cobblestone blocks around it. Then from there only use stone/cobblestone blocks to make your chimney.
If you really want to get a good idea of how to do one. The tutorial map has a second village opposite of the exit door of the starting tutorial. In one of the houses is a sample of how you should set your fireplace. Just make sure you have at least 1 block of spacing around your netherack blocks.
Didn't read all the posts above this one but I think you found that you needed a chimney? I learned that lesson the hard way too. I kept burning my hunting lodge down before stumbling upon the need for a chimney.

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
Update, I solved the fireplace problem, and that thread I referenced did the trick. I made a chimney, moved the row of netherrack back so it's one block outside my house. The fireplace is recessed into the wall but it still looks really good and not abnormal.
So the netherrack has no wood directly above it. The blocks behind the netherrack are even further away from the house, so no problem there. The blocks in front of the netherrack is the wall of my house. I made this brick, and used some smooth stone slabs too above the fireplace to make a mantle (shelf). This goes all the way to the roof, and I replaced the first row of the roof with stone stairs.
Nothing burns now. I have a front porch and I had to cut the length of it back by one block to get it away from the chimney but that didn't really upset the look of my house.
Very happy now, I have a roaring fireplace in my rustic log cabin!
I had a similar problem i had made a giant tree-mansion and i thought it would be the perfect opportunity to try making a fireplace [to those of you adding up the idiocy of that props to you] but when i had finished i set it alight and as soon as i turned my back half of my wall was gone >.> anyway i put it out and had to chop off my northern wall, and floor that was around it and replaced it with some lapis lazuli blocks and it seemed to stop catching on fire i also encased it in glass too.

Vincent: You come here and enjoy spilling their blood…and listening to them cry out! Heather: Are you talking about the monsters? Vincent:Monsters?…They look like monsters to you!?!? Heather: *gasp* Oh no. Vincent: Don’t worry…it’s just a joke.

Nice find.

Glass is wonky its kinda not there like signs...thats why it dont break RS lines going up blocks.
