Well judging by the massive code update done in 1.8 for the PC, i'd say at the very least 3 months. 'Cause if i'm not mistaken, 4j(isn't it?) has to:
1. Add creative mode - which means a total rework on the world creation GUI, inventory checking, adding a gamemode checker, physics rework for creative, add player strength checker etc etc.
2. new bow and chest animations - not much of a big deal.
3. new blocks - vines especially as it - if memory serves correctly, was the first block of its kind. But still, not a big deal.
4. couple new mobs like silverfish & endermen
5.giant mushrooms
6. quite a few new large worldgens - villages, strongholds, mineshafts etc
And thats about it. Now i wasn't ranting, although i'm a little miffed by the fact that people are asking when 1.8 comes out already. Just saying that the minimum time an average update can take is about a month.

also hunger and blocking and enchanting and brewing but at least they got lighting out of the way that was a big one.
The individual features you guys are mentioning aren't what is going to be the biggest time sink. 4j is going to have to figure out how to either make everything work within a limited map size (limited passive mobs, bigger biomes, entirely new world generation mechanic for example) or re-code the game all over again to be much more efficient and be able to increase the limited world size. Sprinting, vines, mushrooms, and all these other mechanics are a non-issue. Look at the bigger picture.

yes they have a lot to do but they know the coding to write so it shouldn't be too hard for them the only real challenge for them is maping the controls to the controller
No I jk prob in a month or 2

Retired StaffI think enchanting a brewing comes later. Though the EXP bar is also in 1.8
I don't expect this update for a few months.
Brewing and enchanting came out after 1.8 so we will see those in 1.2.3
It'd probably take...at the very least 2.5 months... they've been working on it along side the 1.7.3 update so i doubt it'll take more than 4 months.
yeah, breeding comes in 1.8
