Just to point out that minecraft isn't the only game with primarily male-specific characters. I've purchased limited edition games that came with custom armor and gear only to find that the items only work with a male xbl avatar and cannot be worn by a female avatar. Personally, as a girl, I plan to use the squiddy skin! I agree it would be nice to have a few more female characters but it's not a deal breaker for me.
I play Minecraft on XBox with my 4 year old daughter, and she was definitely disappointed that none of the default skins is female. I was planning to buy the Skin Pack to try and resolve that.
Its not an ego trip. Its not her attempt to push her feminist agenda. Unfortunately, I don't know what her deep, well-reasoned justification is, that could help the doubters understand why it matters to her. But it does. She wants her character in the game to be a girl.
And if 4J releases some decent female skins, I will buy them.

If there were only 1 female skin you'd say there were female "skins". The fact is they are very limited and are poor in female value. So to me it is a fail for now until it is improved... not just by quanity... but by quality as well.
The color use of the Knight Templar makes me think that the skin is female. So instead I am ok with the Black Knight until more skins come out. Also, my friend pointed out that the creeperman skin looks like he has a p**** around where his knees should be. My friend, his friends and occasionally LOL at 4J and Microsoft for letting it kinda look like that. Next, the Nurse seems like the only good female skin on the DLC IMO.

i'm pretty sure that they'll give more girl skins then just Nurse and the people that wear helmets. =\
