I love the new shears. Soooo much wool now from the sheep. What you going to do with it all, build wool houses that burn up in thunder! Well what about putting it to some good use. Get those lovely dyes out and dye your sheep, then shear it and you have yourself an easy solution to navigating back to your starting point in caverns. Take your usual stacks of stuff in the mine and a stack of coloured wool. I like to use yellow or orange because they stand out Lapis is a good dye because it doesnt need much to dye sheep Dig it out of your mine and dye the sheep with it. Once you enter your mine and come to your first split cavern pop a cube of wool down and stick a torch on the side of where you came from (4 sides to the wool means you can mark 4 directions.
So much easier than digging an arrow into the ground. For real pros, you can mark the sides with red stone torches of areas you want to explore and havent yet or change the color block of wool and put it next to the caves to be explored. Using wool you get so much more information than just an arrow. How about changing the color block to say climb up or down here or putting the block on the wall with the torch on the top or bottom, variations are endless and you should not get lost again.

That sounds like a lot of work.
I just put a torch on the right wall as I go. Then follow the trail on the left to backtrack.
The thought of just dyeing sheep is great. I hope I can have flocks of blue and pink sheep.

When 1.2.3 comes around with breeding, it'll also bring sheep that can regrow their wool. Then, all you have to do is get sheep, dye them every color, and just shear them every once in a while. People won't need to dupe or complain about there not being enough of every color wool. It will become infinite for all colors.
You must not have been down the caverns I have with multiple right wall exits

I don't get lost. What can I say.
I have posted a sign or two if its a very tricky area. But I will hollow out an area so it looks distinct, I very rarely get lost.
I'm looking forward to the animal husbandry.
Can anyone tell me if there is a spawn limit on the PC version?. I think having dozens of animals would be great. Seem like 5 is the limit on the xbox. At least that's how it plays out in my world.
You can make a passive mob spawner now and get dozens of animals. Instead of making it in the dark and out of stone light it up and put grass on the floor, you get sheep cows pigs....
I enjoy how you say NEW shears. They are not new. They have been in minecraft since July 8, 2011.
The shears may not be new to those of us who have played the PC version for a long while. However, to those who have only ever played the Xbox 360 Edition, the shears are brand new.
This may sound stupid.. But will the sheep grow back their wool? I guess I just don't get the point of the shears if not..
All the animals would despawn before if left, is that still the case?

That is still the case. It's just to make it a little bit more difficult for now. Sheep will eventually regrow their wool (1.1.0 on PC but 1.2.3 for the Xbox 360)
With the latest update you can no longer punch sheep to make their wool drop, you have to use the shears. Im not sure about starting a new world again lol, no iron to make the shears, no shears =no wool, no wool = no bed, no bed = respawn point is where you first spawned.
Can anyone tell me if wolves still make the wool drop when they kill sheep? If they dont, is the only other way without shears is to go spider killing and getting webs? 4 Webs make wool.

The whole thing is rather silly, though, because currently it won't regrow.
So basically, shear the sheep and then kill them so new ones with wool will spawn in faster.
