I built a mob spawning tower on my world and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong since it doesn't seem to be producing. The ceiling is at one below the build height limit, with five floors below. The spawn pads are 6x6 with a two block space between the pads to allow mobs to fall down. At the lowest spawning floor I have a 2 deep path for water to push mobs to the center 2x2 shaft.
I know mobs are spawning inside because I can here skeletons and zombies inside. However, they don't seem to be making it to the center shaft. I really don't care how they die (drowning, gravity, lava, etc) I just want them to fall down the shaft so i can pick up their drops. I'll try to post some screens later today. Help please.
It may be the 2 block wide channel, mine is three wide and I don't have a problem. Is there water current or standing water? Also you could be out of the range where mobs move around, try getting a bit closer and see if they start falling.
Another trick would be to put signs around the pads, the mobs think its a full block, step on it and fall.
It could be a number of things but I would start there. After you post some screenshots we may be able to help a bit more.
Mobs will stop wandering within 5 seconds if there is no player within a 32 block radius. In this state, they will glance around randomly, but they won't walk anywhere.
You might be too far if it is built at the height ceiling, try to count exactly 25 blocks from the spawn pads and sit there on a platform and see if they start dropping.
Too bad you can only hear them & not see what they're doing in there. The pads are staggered, right? Mobs will only drop down a 2 space edge. 3 or more & they'll just wander around their spawn pads & not jump off.
You could replace a section of wall with glass, let 'em spawn at night, and then watch what they're doing during the day. The creepers won't be affected by the sunlight.
You might of placed signs in the wrong sections of the water currents. Maybe somewhere there is a water current that is not forcing them to drop in the middle.
Did some remodeling last night; staggered spawn pads, removed drop shaft, opened up the hole in the spawner to 4x4, adjusted sign placement. I did my renovations in peaceful mode and when I switched over to normal I was standing under the spawner and I almost got hit in the head by a skeleton. thanks for the help.

Anytime you make one of these. Make it at least a 3x3 drop so that even spiders don't plug it up.
