I think my TV is making it appear worse, the screen shot looks far better on my laptop, on my TV I cant see past about half the first block of glass, let alone the 3 or 4 behind it.
Along with several others, I have to say that I do not care for the new lighting style. Any indoor/underground lighting is now accompanied with a yellowish tint that seems to fill the area almost like a fog, or like one is wearing glasses with yellow lenses. Adding to this new unpleasant light is the fact that light reflected on a surface directly by a light source still appears white, as it did with the original lighting system.
My second complaint about the lighting is the new opacity added to glass blocks. Prior to the change I had created several pools of water with glass floors and torches underneath the floors. At night the torches would illuminate the pools of water. Now the illumination effect has gone.
I feel the original lighting style was much more pleasant to look at and I much prefer the look of the light and the interaction/shadowing of the original style.
Just posting to let 4J know that some of us aren't happy with this new change and sorry that my first post is a negative one. Really fun game overall, can't stop playing it. I even got up early this morning so that I could check out the new update before leaving for work.

exactly ! its like wearing brown sunglasses that for some reason dont work around the torch itself.
And yeah on the glass too, my giant light above my base (full of lava) now is just opaque in day light
no it really has changed the game has a horrible yellow hue to it now, could be only the artificial lighting but god its ugly.
Dude i thought that was just me that saw the yellow tint to everything. i actually thought there was something wrong w/my xbox or HDTV Jesus everything has that yellow tint @ night it's crazy
I love the new lighting system. Makes the inside of my peaceful dome look even better.
Haters are gonna hate. The sooner people stop whining about it, the sooner they'll get used to it and forget about all the stupid arguing and complaining.
The people whining about the lighting should stop. You don't have to, of course, but you should. The light looks as it should. Natural ambient light diffuses over distance which is the "brown" you are seeing. There is less light intensity as you get farther away from the source. Also, fire has a natural yellow/orange color that it gives off, and so, should make the surroundings look slightly yellow/orange.
Here are some pictures as an example:
Not a torch on a wall, but the same principle applies.

Candle.
/End rant about whiny whiners whining.
How wonder.. but thats NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE how many more times
I seriously don't understand how you guys prefer the old lighting system rather than the new one. The new one is so much more smoother and easy on the eyes. It adds so much to your builds. The old one was just so.. bland. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder why you ever complained about it, trust me.
I highly suspect it's people's shitty TVs. I play on a 42 in plasma and the new light looks fantastic.
Cobblestone is brighter and brick looks more brick-red rather than stop sign red. The ocean looks great at night and light travels farther through open air, making the night less pitch black.
Just wait till the haters realize the texture changes..... Like I said before It's always something... I want the update NOW then, This Update Sucks. Just shut up already... Ya got what ya wanted and hate it, You'll get over it!!!! Do ya like the new Xbox Dashboard or, still hate it, or did you get used to it? STFU
Alright, so I updated my Minecraft the first 10 minutes it came out, I was excited for all the new stuff but I noticed my house looked different, the glass from a distance looked weird, the trees were dark from the wood, some white wool is stained, and cobblestone has a pale brownish color. I really don't like it so will it change, will be choose what lighting system we want, or will it be the same lighting system until 1.8?
I never had Minecraft PC so I don't know what will come in the 1.8 update.
The further away your torches are the more yellow it looks. So if it is looking brown add some more torches.
Come on, people. Get over it. The new lighting system looks great, so much smoother. Yes, the glass looks like ****, pero meh, can't have everything perfect, right?
Also, I personally found it's easier to mine now, with the new light. Hope you get used to it soon, as it's not gonna go anywhere.

See that nice yellow tint to the bright light around the torch ?
Yeah no bright white and then suddenly yellow
I don't see what you're talking about. I see a nice gradual light change like below.
yeah I dont get that, there's a clear white circle that then turns that 'brown' colour which even on a high gamma is more pronounced than yours
