Does anyone know what's the "update surprise" 4J Studios was talking about? Because they said there was something for players to find out but so far, I've not found anything new.

I'm not 100% sure bit it could just mean new sugar cane, cactus, etc. I saw a fireplace working in a house and a Minecraft sitting on grass. That may have been there before bit ai just noticed it this time.
I don't think anything crazy new was added that we don't already know about but hey, I could be wrong.

Was it mentioned in the update list? If not, there are the new textures for Cooked Porkchops, and maybe Steak. I haven't checked if Steak is there. What's weird is, didn't Cooked Porkchops get the new texture in 1.8? I may be wrong.
I have found one thing the didn't mention and that is skeletons can mount spiders and chase you as well as shoot you lol
Spider Jockeys were in the previous version.

there is 1 of the surprises they added I was so shocked when I seen that
