I play 4 player splitscreen almost exclusively (in fact, this game is the reason I finally broke down and bought an HDTV). Its a great feature, and the best game to play with my kids. However, there are a few issues, that if resolved, could make a HUGE improvement in the experience. I wonder if anyone else has suggestions for better splitscreen.
1) The quickbar/hotbar is almost illegible from couch distance. It'd be great if you could hold a button (Down on the D-pad?) to zoom the currently selected item (think of the Dock on Mac OSX), and display the name of the item in LARGE text.
2) Inventory is also nearly illegible from a distance (although aided by the RB "whats this"). It'd be nice to have a separate, ever-present, window to the side or above the main inventory window that displays an enlarged view of the item currently under the cursor. Also, display in LARGE text the name of the item. There is little need to show anything else when on the inventory screen, so you should use as much screen real-estate as possible.
3) In 3 player splitscreen, allow 1 player (world owner) to have half of the screen, instead of leaving an unused quadrant.
I've been having troubles too. I play enough minecraft to instantly know that something oval and pink is a porkchop, XD so the size isnt really a problem, but it'd be nice to have it bigger. My trouble, however is, I play with my bro, and we're usually in different caves on splitscreen. We hear a zombie and both stop mining and look around. then we realize it's in my brothers cave behind a wall. I think, when there's, for instance, a zombie gurgling in Player 2's area, it should put a small zombie head at the top of their screen. Another example would be, if a cow goes Moo in Player 1's area, it will put a Cow head at the top of their screen. With water, lava, or any other block, it would put that block at the top of the players screen. that way, no more freaking out when the zombie is in the other players cave. I hope I explained that well, in short, icons displaying which players screen is making the noises.
I am wondering why they decided hd for two player is a must. I mean i can not play multiplayer on any of the tvs in the house. Just wish HD was not a requirement.....><
oh well... Your ideas are actually really great.:D

This is so that splitscreen doesn't look like complete garbage. It would be even WORSE then it already is.
Agree. I have a 60" TV and it is still very hard to navigate the inventory on split screen. Honestly, I'd like it if the inventory filled the window on split screen mode.

Into your life it will creep. It starts when you're always afraid. You step outside, the creeper comes and blows you away.
I do have to wear my glasses when playing splitscreen, which kind of stinks since I don't have that bad of vision and normally go without glasses completely. Not sure what a good fix for some of the problems would be... But yeah, three player not wasting a quadrant would be awesome.
