Mushrooms grow like crazy for me, even in well lit caves, they spread like germs. I've got a room for growing mushrooms at home, it's 6x8 they grow like crazy and it has 2 torches in there and one above the entrance. I find caverns with 1000's of them, take them all bar 1, light the place up, and when I come back (after a while) they've all grown back and spread even further along the caves. Yet I never get hostile mobs, so they're certainly not dark areas.
yeah i've found red mushroom growths larger than this one but i don't care much for those since they're every where. i love finding mushroom patches in caves. it looks so cool, haha.

Really? Brown mushrooms are super common, but I guess people love counting out how many of them can grow. On my map, red mushrooms are as rare as NPCs.

Yeah, I think the mushroom fields will be a thing of the past after the next update (not this July update, the next one). The wiki says:
"After Beta 1.8, mushrooms' spreading ability was severely restricted - a mushroom would only spread if there were fewer than 5 mushrooms of the same type in a 9w x 9l x 3h area around the original mushroom. However, mushroom farming became much easier since Bone Meal could be used on mushrooms to grow Huge Mushrooms that dropped several individual fungi when harvested. Mushrooms could also be found more easily in the new swamp biome under vine-covered trees."
I had a well lit cave i had explored, needed room for some diamonds i found, so i placed my brown and red mushroom i had waiting to be made into soup, came back a few days later and it nearly dominated the entire cave. Only stopping 2 blocks away from a torch, spreading around it when it can.

wow, on my map I never seem to be able to find Brown mushrooms. Red mushrooms really outnumber the brown ones. Red also grows better for me...
red mushrooms grow better for me, too. it's annoying to go down into my farm and see the brown mushrooms have spread slightly yet the red ones in the next room are every where.

You still find trails of mushrooms in later versions. But not entire carpets of mushrooms....
One of the first things I did when I got the 360 version was plant mushrooms in my houses knowing that I'd have mushroom carpeting pretty quickly.....
Doesn't work nearly as well on the newer versions.
Shame it wasn't red mushrooms.
