Above 24? And whats the limit they despawn?
I went to slime finder and got the chunks bro
Between 24 and 32 blocks away is ideal. Any less and they won't spawn, any more and there is a chance they will despawn. Keep in mind that Slimes have a low chance of spawning, so if you haven't lit up the caves around the slime chunk then you will get little to no slimes to spawn since other mobs will be spawning instead.

It says in that pic. above 24??? 24 blocks away in a radius from the player.
Mobs will despawn randomly 32 blocks (radius from player)
128 mobs despawn instantly
*Yeah, every time another mob spawns its a potential loss for a slime to spawn*
Does it matter how high it is?
Mines 4 blocks high and some people have it 3 blocks high.
Can i like go away and do something else?
Farther than 128 from the chunk?
Remember slime finder gives co's for the edge of the chunk not center.
As it stands, while I haven't tested this 100% On the xbox you need to be outside the chunk for slimes to spawn, 30 blocks horizontally (x, or z) not y.
You have to be 128 or more blocks away for slime to "despawn" Again that's from the chunk, vertically does not apply. More and more I beleive for the xbox version at least, the wiki is slightly incorrect about blocks away as a radius.
Again check out Slimes 101, the very first post has pretty much everything you need to know.

Hows your testing going. Im pretty sure xbox has different spawning rules, as Ive tested from PC 1.6.6 (in regards to other hostile mobs) and distances seem to be alot different. Like building the same mob traps and getting way less on xbox version, comparing the both. It seems on XBMC I have to be farther away from my gravity traps for a decent amount to spawn. But if im at the drop point 25 blocks down hardly any spawn.
i personally think my slime room and mob spawner may be too close but im not sure and i don;t think i wannt actually count the amount of blocks apart they are.
i should really set-up my laptop infront of my xbox so i can use the slime finder .. i'm on Glacier map atm and the slimefinder is just confusing,
You wouldnt have to count, thats what the map coords are for =P

Also, are you even sure you're in a chunk that Slimes spawn in? Just because you saw a Slime there doesn't mean it's where he spawned.
