This is a really stupid question, but can you pick up drops when you're riding in a minecart at full speed? Or in general? I don't even know if you can pick up items in general. Again, it's a really nooby question, but I've never tried it and I've never seen any videos of it happening.
I just need to know so I don't waste my time making my minecart track go through my dungeons and my automatic cactus farm.
If you want something close to that, I suggest making powered rails (no redstone torches) so when you reach a certain spot, you can stop, hop out, grab your drops, then hop back in and hit a lever or button.

Right now, I have separate tracks going to each place and back, stopping at the destination. I planned on connecting each track to make one big track going around to each destination, but only if I'd be able to pick up drops.
I don't think so dropped items seem to stop minecarts dead. maybe if the items are a block above and 1 to the side of the track it could be possible.
I have it set so the track takes a dip so it's one block under the drops, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to pick up all of the drops if I'm going at full Minecart speed.
I think dropped items on the track will stop the cart. Not 100% this, but someone was in a cart, when he tossed something out, and he stopped. And I'm not sure if the items can be close enough to be picked up and not be on the track. Besides, why would you need to?
sounds like he built his tracks next to a mob grinder, and wants to pick up the drops without getting out. what if you made the track go under the spot where the drops fall, and have a hatch connected to a detector rail, so that it opens and lets all the drops fall onto you as you pass? I have no idea if that would work. Would be cool if it did.

Yeah correct me if I'm wrong.
My minecart track goes past my 3 dungeons that I found mining along with my underground automatic cactus farm.

That would be quite amazing if it did work! I'll try something like that when the update comes and we get sticky pistons. =)
I tried to make a cart from my house to my mob spawner. I built the spawner....Built the track.... Pressure plates that flip a light in my house a ways away. Jump in the cart...Start rolling to the trap and bam... it stops. Now I am going to make it so water puts it in one location that the cart will pass close by. Or wait for pistons to push them when triggered by detector rail.
But to answer your question. You can pick them up when in a cart. But if on the track, they will stop you.

Thank you! This is great to know. Now I can set up my track so I can use the stick piston door for the drops =D
Yes you can pick up any and all drops from inside a minecart, as long as there not on the track. I had built a large room with my mob trap in it. I included my wheat, mushroom and sugar cane farm. I had water push the drops to one block beside the minetrack at head level. I did not miss any drops. Make sure to build this inside a closed building so no animals get on the track or it will not work. With the upcoming update you can have pistons release water onto your farms making this process quicker. You just have to wire them up using pistons, repeaters and a lot of redstone to one lever located at the start of your track.
How many rails would you put after each power rails? i would imagine 10 rails then 2 power rails.
I put a powered rail every 30 blocks. So, I have a starting power rail, then 29 regular rails, then another power rail. I found this to be the easiest way to avoid lag while keeping the highest possible speed.

Thanks once again. I understand redstone very well. I have used it a buttload in my PC singleplayer save. My world is massive. I'm very proud of myself.
Once we do finally get pistons, I'm gonna be going crazy mining redstone. =P

After 15 regular tracks place a powered rail. Thats the minimum you need I believe.
