I am surprised that we don't have a sticky thread to collect suggestions for 4J in one handy, dandy location for suggestions on what they could implement into the XBLA version. Exclusive game mechanics, items, etc... This thread talks about new blocks in particular, but there should be a thread that contains ALL suggestions for future content.
I had just posted this idea in another thread, but I thought it was a workaround that could combat the limited world size and appease those that don't want to continuously begin new worlds after each major update.
Biome Seeds
When 1.8 is released, we will have access to new biomes (jungle, swamp, etc...), but barring any map expansion to accompany the update, many of us will be forced to abandon our current worlds we've dedicated hours/days/weeks? into just to experience the new content.
So my idea is to add a new item or items. Biome Seeds. Each player is granted a few biome seeds, similar to saplings. Maybe they automatically appear in your inventory upon logging in or maybe they come from whacking tall weeds at random or even a new recipe. But once acquired, all you need to do is traverse to an area of your map you'd like to reinvent and plant the seed. After a few day/night cycles, the area will be transformed (a certain block radius) into the biome you planted.
Example: I want a jungle so I can find cats. I whack down some weeds and acquire a "Jungle" seed. I have a perfect area on my map that is begging for a facelift. I plant the seed in the middle and leave for a few days and when I return... JUNGLE!

I think the new biomes will be addressed in the fact that the map will be updated to be larger, possibly infinite, thus opening up new areas of the map for new biomes to grow. As far as things i want in the game...
* Rubber Blocks, bounce on them and dont give fall damage.
* Special Boots you can craft that dont take fall damage but dont provide protection. Wear down just like all other armor.
* Special Chest Plate you can craft that doubles your inventory but provides no protection.
* Special Helmet that doubles amount of time you can spend underwater
* More animals
* More mobs
* Spear weapon, does less damage than sword, but better range and can be thrown.
* Throwing Stars, similar to arrows but thrown.
* Ridable things, like horses, air balloons, bigger boats, etc.
* Lamp you can carry that emits light, but uses fuel
* New ores
* New farmable things
* New dimensions
* Shield that blocks damage
Ive got more but cant remember at the moment. Many of these were ideas ive heard here on the forums, so they are not all mine in originality.
QuiqkSilver, I like your ideas. I'd change the inventory increasing Chest Plate to a Backpack though.
Another idea (not mine, but have seen it suggested numerous times)...
Gateway
Built in a similar way to the Nether Portal, but maybe out of Gold Blocks or Iron or whatever. It can be placed anywhere and once activated, either links to a brand new world or another world in your saved list (not sure how feasible that would be). This would allow users to transport between two or more worlds, sharing resources, fixing the issue with world generation in newer updates and would allow for "infinite" exploration.
Issues with this would be load times or memory resources. I'm not a game coder...

A lot of these already exist in some form in the official game. The Ender Chest doubles your inventory, you can enchant boots to reduce fall damage, enchanted helmets extend your underwater time/efficiency, cats are coming, Endermen are coming, melons and pumpkins (and cocoa beans, eventually) will be farmable and The End will make an appearance some day.
