Is it just me, or does the note block hearing distance need to be increased, or at least changeable?
I make music with them, and you can't even hear it, because the redstone circuit is so big. I mean, it only takes up one large room on multiple levels, but still, you can't hear all of the blocks =(
Also, does anyone have any solid information on the actual distance, and how it works?
We put pressure plates with noteblocks attached in out Mob Trap and we can hear them 25 block away in the collection site. So I am not sure what the problem is here.

Yeah, I can hear them from further.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
It could be if the noteblock is contained inside a room it is muffled by the wall? I made doorbells for my multiplayer world on everyone's houses, and unless you are close to the noteblock(about 7 spaces) you can't hear it, but I have everything buried under the floor.

Our noteblocks are concealed underground 20+ blocks away and we can hear it fine
Ok well did some research after I ate lunch, straight from the wiki "A note block must have at least one block of air above it to play a sound. Notes can be heard up to 48 blocks away.", So maybe it is a sound setting that I messed up, I do have the music sound down all the way, but I can still hear note blocks up close as they should be sound effect, not music... I will have to look into it when I get home
I have outdoor noteblocks. Only eight, and I can hear six. The last two notes aren't audible unless I run towards the last block after hitting the button.
Also keep in mind that pitch is a factor. Bass notes (or low notes) are harder to register than, say, mid-octave notes. igher octaves (higher-pitched notes) are audible but almost as weak as low notes. These sound variations differ as well with how many blocks are concealing them.
For instance, my house is a good 12 blocks below ground, and my doorbell is set up with noteblocks near the base of my house and the button up on the surface. If you hit it, you can hear the first three notes but the 4th note (which is a low octave) will seem to be silent unless you stand closely to the ladder going down into the house. But then again, I also covered the mechanism with 10 layers of dirt.
Yeah, where my button is, there's a note block a few blocks below, and a couple of blocks to the left, but I can't hear it unless I press the button, then stand directly on top of it.
The sound travels 48 blocks to all sides, and only 13-15 blocks up and down.
Did not know that! Thanks for the info, that could be part of my problem anyway. Also the mention of the low octaves, all the door bells are set at the bottom 6 note octaves, so that could be the other half of my problem.

IMO i think there bugged and need a patch or something to make them louder.
