First, let me say I know there is a slime 101 thread and I have read it but it does not answer this question/problem.
I found a slime chunk randomly around layer 16 somewhat near to my home on the surface. When I found a few slimes I cleared out a 2 high area and made it a very large room, maybe something like 12x36 approx.
A few times now I have gone down and cleaned house and had great yields. Now they don't seem to be spawning any longer. Today I went to the surface for a few hours building a big mob grinder and figured for sure I had slimes down there after that amount of time spent away but when I looked I got nothin. Any ideas why they stopped spawning?
Could your mob grinder above be interfering with the slimes spawning, each other mob that is spawned takes up a spot where a slime could've spawned.
I don't think so because my mob grinder is way above sea level probably around 80-90 and the slimes spawn underground way below sea level below layer 16.
Is the grinder in the same chunk as you slime spot?(basically on top of)?
Are you playing on easy or above(sorry had to ask)
Are you on top of the same spot while building? Go back down there with your map, note the position and then travel back to the surface. travel 40-50 blocks. Hang there for a bit or build something, say ten min. Then return.
Also, now that you have the position of you slime room, go back to the surface and dig straight down to it... Looking for caves where they maybe spawning above.

If you or you mob grinder are in the same chunk it could affect the spawning... This goes back to the slime 101 thread where I'm typing about chunk vs. block distance spawning. Just try getting some distance and see what happens, then try the cave elimination.

Tell us how it turns out.

I'll check my map and return back here for an update. I don't totally understand how chunks work. I hear they are 16x16 blocks is that correct? does a chunk go from 0-128?
I'm thinking my mob grinder is not in the same chunk but I'll have to double check. There may be an issue with mobs spawning in the same slime chunk though because the problem seemed to have started before I built my grinder.
Yes, a chunk is 16x16 from the top of the map to bedrock.
My slime trap is directly below my house, between layer 5 and layer 16. With a 2 floor system, spanning 32x32. I have an issue with slimes not spawning if I'm not within 30ish blocks of the spawner. I noticed this last night while doing a bit of decoration down there. Any time I came back up to the house for an extended amount of time, when I'd return nothing would be down there. But, as I worked on the trap/collection room they would spawn into the farthest corner of the spawn room.
My thinking is this (and this is just opinion): Mobs (aggro and passive) won't spawn if you're further than 30ish blocks away from the games chosen location, but also won't spawn if you're within 24 blocks of the location. The latter is stated time and again across the forums, as for the actual spawn distance having a maximum, I'm just guessing.
My gravity mob trap above ground works great if I'm in the house, or the surrounding area, but as soon as I drop down to work the slime trap, I get no drops from the grinder. Also, the roof of the grinder has a passive spawning area on it, but its above 32 blocks above the ground, and any time I'm not directly under the trap, I don't notice any farm animals falling into the area.
Thats my theory. Maybe it helps you figure out your problem.

Intriguing as I know my spawner is well over 32 blocks, as the room its connected to is 44 blocks deep by itself and that is underground, and yet I get animal drops at the bottom of mine when I am working down the bottom o the room on the opposite side to the spawner.

I don't get the drops 100% of the time. I've never sat back and counted the blocks to tell when they stop/start. I was just guessing a bit. I do know the drops are significantly less/not there after I spend a long period in the caves.
Another theory is the item limit/timers. Perhaps I'm getting drops, as the OP may be, but there's too much time between my collections.
As I said above, it was my opinion/theory. If I can prove it wrong, or someone can give us some hard numbers, I'd be grateful. I'm sure the OP would be as well.
Lies. Slime spawn in 2 high rooms - if a giant slime spawns, it will 'suffocate' and split. My entire slime farm is two high and I have NO problems with slimes. The funniest is when a giant slime spawns and does not suffocate, nor can he move. So he just looks at you and spins.

Since you're mob grinder and slime farm underground are really close to each other, they interfere with each others spawn rate. It doesn't matter if your grinder is above sea level on level 80 or 90, either way it's close to the slimes underground at level 16. Meaning they are only about 70 blocks away from each other. I had this happen to me, so I had to move my Mob grinder around 100 blocks away in a spheric range from my slimes. I can honestly tell you both of them work perfectly.
If you dont want to move something big like your grinder, wait for pistons then you can setup a flushing system. If you turn the water on in your grinder (so spawnable pads are covered) then mobs wont spawn there. Same goes for the slimes, you can cover it with water if you want your grinder to be more efficient.
Kind of like a switch to turn off a specific trap.
Ok I'm back with some more info on my slime farm with pictures.
Here is my actual slime farm...
and here is a picture of the map with me standing at layer 16 inside the slime farm. Notice the red circle, that is where my mob grinder is above ground around layer 80.
I think, according to the information given in this thread so far that my mob grinder should not at all be affecting my slime farm. It seems they are just too far apart.
I may have found the problem though but I can't sure yet. I did find a big cavern that wrapped around a few times near the slime farm but somewhat above it. I went through and slayed all the monsters and lit it up pretty good. When I went back down to the slime farm after that I had one tiny slimer bouncing around but that was it. Now I am sitting 30 or so blocks away waiting to see if more will spawn.
very helpful. Usually there are more caves around the area that can't be found only way is to hear a zombie or skeleton through a wall.and you said it was a 12x32? try making it 16 wide so you will get the max amount of the chunk
I left to go gather some supplies at my house then went off to collect some of my mob grinder drops for a few minutes. When I returned to the slime farm area there were about 4 or 5 medium sized slimes that scared the crap out of me when I turned the corner.
So.....it's definitely not my mob grinder and almost certainly the other mobs spawning in the vicinity.
