A nice mixture of materials is better no? However stone has a smothness to it that wood lacks but as a trade-off it's kind of plain. I voted for stone though since it's significantly safer.

well, if you need something other than glass...stone. smoothstone looks cooler than cobble, and it's even better if you light stuff up with glowstone.
