How do I grow the big trees?

I was wondering if anybody knew how to get the big tree's to grow with bone meal. I always get the smaller ones. Is there something that ensures I get a big tree?

You surround the sapling in two block high tube of cobblestone. If you use bone meal it will take a few tries but if you leave it it will grow
