I've dived from near block limit to a two deep pool of water, as long as its' two deep it'll be enough to dampen your fall
Oh, I was going on by what's in the wiki, but I keep forgetting that a lot of the wiki info applies to later versions on the PC and isn't always relevant. o:
This guy is a freakin' genius. This one video of his changed my life
And I play on an SMP PvP server, I always carry one bucket of water and one of lava, Someone comes to steal my stuff, I drop my lava on them from the murder holes over my door. And when I raid, I bring the water as defense from people using my lava defense, and a lava bucket in case I could drop it on them

I have another one for you all, clearing mine cart tracks in the abandoned mine shafts for your inventory.
One word of caution on this one. I believe cart tracks are similar to tilled soil in that if the water falls down onto the track the track is destroyed. Trying to make an underwater tunnel in an old world of mine, I noticed anytime I had a breach and water flowed into the tunnel, I'd end up a few track-pieces short when putting everything back down. Maybe it was just a random track piece glitching through a wall or something, but it it seemed too consistent to be that. After a while I made it a habit to block off my tunnel if there was a chance of water getting in.
A good way to get down a long drop, such as a ravine, you can place your water on the side and hop in, scoop it up as the water will take you down and you also get to keep your water source block.
Love these tips, I knew about half of them but my game will be a lot easier knowing the other ones. Too bad you stop being superman in the Nether!
