I do; filled with all my iron, gold, diamond, a golden apple, lapis lazuli blocks, and slime balls. So what about you? I think one is needed even if you play with friends.
I have just about as many hidden chests as I do chests in plain sight. I only play with friends, and keep enough good stuff out in the open for them to use, but I keep my TNT chests hidden for the most part. Also, I keep chests filled with important things hidden. I usually have it on hard difficulty, so people tend to take a bunch of diamond armor and tools, then die. So my resources get depleted fairly often. It's always nice to have a stash.
It's FAR too easy to hide chests. One thing that seems to work is hiding them three blocks under the floor of your house with a hole above the chest so you can open it, but the floor looks the same. You can also hide them under a tree or under you foundations, hell, i have a hidden chest room that is EASILY accessible and really easily found but people just walk straight past it, noone has even noticed it yet

Can you walk through the painting or you have to remove it. Interesting though, How could i have not thought of that. After all I've seen that throughout movies and shows, Just never thought of minecraft.

I have a chest thats on the shadowy side of a large building, above a balocny. The only way to see it is to either notice it from ground level (about 40 blocks down), or look for that 1/4 inch sliver of chest block that you reach from the balcony adjacent to it. It's served well, so far.
I have one in my giant library. I only use it to hide my stack of diamonds and my music disk. I think having a hidden chest is a must if you're playing with other people.

Ill probably make a secret safe underground by an island.I have many valuables that I dont want just taken from my chest. Im generous to give things out but I had moments were that specific item runs out

I would say condense all your valuables so they can fit in a single chest and put it in a hole 2 deep in your floor.
the only way people wont find chests if it its built into objects like a fountain or something. then only if they grief your stuff will they find it. in houses or wall or floors its to easy for someone to find. random islands and water holes i think a random miner might stumble into it. I do make secret rooms but i only play with friends and we have a if u find a colored wall dont rip into it cause its a safe room kinda ordeal. e ven tho they can steal stuff i can steal it right back....
unless they leave with it on their body. whigh i think 4J needs to fix soon.

I have been hiding mine in in the bottom of a lake next to my house with a hidden room at the bottom of it.
Once pistons come out the options are much better.
That's the whole reason why I have a back up of my world on a flash drive, though I don't hide my two stacks of gunpowder.

place a few ladders to get back out and make sure to dig deep enough not to flood it, and voila! a hidden room.
If you are worried about someone finding it. put it in line with something and cover the sign with a sand block.
40 hidden.
Because that's how I roll with a 1:40 scale.
