(taken from another thread i posted in few weeks ago)
Heres the farm I use (just remade it on pc) Mushrooms grow in light levels 12 and lower (they grow faster in light lvl 5) But I get more than enough mushrooms from this type of room than I need for Soup. Can post screen from xbox version just thought it was easier while I was on the comp.
Its odd, my red mushrooms HATE growing. I've tried all sorts of farms. I've been trying to get an easy farm going, one where you use water to wash em away at the end. None of em produce for crap though. My newest one hadn't produced a single mushroom in 5 days. There is zero light on em too, I blockade the whole thing shut at the end of the build. All I have to do, ideally, is pop a single block and the water falls into the farm and washes em to the collection area.
Any idea whats up? Maybe I'm not actually waiting long enough, does sleeping in a bed factor AGAINST the time needed? I assumed it counted toward the harvest time. Maybe not, I dunno. Light level 0 should be makin these things produce pretty good, and no mobs can fit in there. There is only a single block space for them to grow around in. Any ideas?
redstone torches do provide light but only level 7 which isn't enough to stop mob spawns.
the way I build my shroom farms is like this:
= stone = 8 long channel with shrooms that don't get harvested (this channel spreads shrooms to the other 4) = 8 long channel that shrooms grow in (harvested by flushing with water)
this is an end view with the farm going 8 blocks back.
I also cover ends of the shroom tunnels while growing to minimise light inside.
as there is only 1 block of space anywhere in the farm there are 0 mob spawns. If I need more shrooms this design is easily stackable and harvesting with water will be reduced to a single button push as soon a pistons are out.
Nice, I like this design, i use a design similar to this but with a flat floor and a mushroom one block down in the centre of the room covered by a block (to protect the spreading mushroom).
like this:
I might create something like this:
originating from your design
i have two slabs stacked on each other. should i remove one layer? also, does anyone know if redstone torches are enough light to keep monsters out but still grow mushrooms?
I put a couple red mushrooms in my house. It's fully lit, torches and glowstone everywhere. The mushrooms not only cover my entire floor, they also used the stairs and covered the upstairs floor, which is also completely lit. In a room by one of the mob spawners I found I put a couple brown mushrooms. That room is also completely lit, and those brown mushrooms now cover that floor.
I think it's safe to say, at least in my worlds, that light has no effect on mushroom growth and spread.
yeh I think the bottom design is probably one of the best ways of growing shrooms.
With the top you have 1 shroom 'source' for every 8 growing spots, with the bottom its a ratio of 1:4. So the bottom will be ready for harvesting in less than half the time. Probably in much less than half the time.
just gotta wait a few days for auto piston havesting though
Yeah i didn't really think about efficiency when i made my first farm, I just made it up quickly, time to re-do
acording to the wilk mushrooms grow in light level 12 or less, so assuming your lighting is on the walls/ceiling then all of your floor will be light level 12 or below. Even if you have torches on the floor shrooms will still grow up to 1 block away from them.
also the wiki states that shrooms grow faster at light levels 5 and lower. As the OP was asking about trying to make her brown shrooms grow faster, I was showing shroom farm designs that try to maximise efficiency, not farms that just work slowly.
Cool man, I didn't know all that. I was just saying that I accidentally grew a bunch of mushrooms in my house, and in another room. The room with the browns only has torches on the walls because it's a small room. My house however has torches everywhere on the floor and the shrooms just grow around them. I guess if you're trying to get a bunch of shrooms in a short time period, my accidental "place and forget" method will not work.
Yeah, we're not on 1.8, so why does this matter at all?
Are you in 1.7? Since means 1.8, 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 all together
Edit: if they spread in your world the best way is just to do a 8x how much you want and place water on a side with piston doors, then the water goes to a side of that 8 x something and you can collect them, and for no mobspawning just add upside down half slabs above the mushrooms
You might wanna move your redstone torch, because if there is a light level higher than 5 on the floor they are growing on they wont grow (Or at least that's what i've heard mine grow in daylight) also put more brown shrooms down, i have farms of both, incredibly successful. I have a room separating each type of shroom with a door in-between them so they wont leak out. If you place brown ones on one side and then the other you should see some results quicker. but a single shroom really does take an INCREDIBLY long time to grow and spread so don't worry so much.
EDIT: Or if you find a few in a cave YOU LEAVE THEM DAMN SHROOMS ALONE
Make a mental note. Next time you go back it should be filled, and i mean FILLED, and it should just go on and on, and for some reason my torches dont seem to cause any problems down there

lol alright. i placed more brown mushrooms down and made a separate room for my red ones. i only placed the redstone torch down to show him they do provide light, just a tad, but it is light. i put a single torch up in the ceiling, five blocks high. my mushrooms are spreading, slowly but they are growing.
Booya! Finally figured out how to upload pictures from my phone to the web so I got to put these. :)It's like 6 - 8 stacks of each mushroom product, maybe a half stack each to start up the room.
The people in my world will NEVER fo hungry! :)They mIght trip the **** out eating so many shrooms though, lol.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.

nothing wrong with trippin' out from so many shrooms i mean wat
like i said in the other thread, SWEET JESUS. i will never have a farm as successful as yours.
Nothing wrong with it at all. Actually i think everyone should try them once. Then again that's off topic.
Well I have like 13 people in total who build on my server with me so I like to build large enough farms to sustain everyone, so no one gets the urge to start stealing.
That's all I wanted to show you last night, so you could see the setup. Not a single mob spawns, which is pretty cool because under the farm is a mob trap that's about the same size so I would think it'd glitch out just once and have a monster spawn up there, but not yet luckily.

i've never tried them, mainly because i'm afraid i'll go insane.
i'm the only person who really plays on my server. i don't trust people to let them play on it all the time, hah.
and what are in the holes that are providing light? how far up are they?

Forum Admin... There is very dim light in the room, if maybe you can't see because your screen is too dark.
Redstone torches DO provide light, just very little of it.
Regular torches produce light level 14, redstone torches light level 7.
lol alright. i placed more brown mushrooms down and made a separate room for my red ones. i only placed the redstone torch down to show him they do provide light, just a tad, but it is light. i put a single torch up in the ceiling, five blocks high. my mushrooms are spreading, slowly but they are growing.
lol whatever you say.
i have my torches in the wall like you do in those pictures, but they're five blocks high.
