so i'm trying to grow a mushroom farm. it's underground and there's absolutely no light in the room. the red mushrooms were growing fine but creepers were spawning down there so i changed the stone floor to a stone slab floor. can mushrooms grow on slabs? if so, why the **** aren't my brown mushrooms growing. i thought maybe they wouldn't grow if i was far away, so i'm been working in my house. i go down the ladder and what do you know, the brown mushroom hasn't spread.
Red mushrooms do dominate the brown ones you know...

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
Actually having the same issue. I have my mushroom farm connected to my Greenhouse and Zombies spawned inside and decided to trample my wheat... Anyway, I have seen Mushrooms spawn from dirt to halfslabs, but I don't think I've ever seen them grow from halfslabs to another halfslab. I'm just going to fill most of it with halfslabs and put a few dirt blocks in the middle with mushrooms on them.
I have tunnels where its just wall to wall mushrooms, and all extremely well there well lit too.
Yes shrooms grow on slabs and stairs.
Plant a few more, and spacing every other block. Then just give it time, say five game days at least.
Literally have mining tunnels that look infested.
It maybe possible that depth y=number has something to do with it. From my slime farm to my second mining station it is filled with shrooms, that would make it y=-20 to about -50 I'll check out the numbers next I go down there.

i have two slabs stacked on each other. should i remove one layer? also, does anyone know if redstone torches are enough light to keep monsters out but still grow mushrooms?
Try making 2 separate farms.. (2 different rooms) 1 red, 1 brown

I have redstone torches in mine, they don't work. They worked in my first farm but they haven't in any farm I've made after that.

If the slabs are giving you problems, you should change the floor back to dirt or stone and make the room only 2 blocks high. Then every 4-5 blocks mine a hole up and add a torch.
TRUST ME everything grows perfect and not a single monster spawns.
If you'd like a quick 2 min observation of mine, add me. It's real easy to do and extremely effective.

They produce a light level of 7. Regular torches produce a light level of 15.
Do some research my fellow crafters!
lol exactly. he's silly.
anyway, i removed the slabs and put stone. i planted a few brown mushrooms. i'm going to use the five block high torch idea. if it for some reason starts to not work, i will definitely do your idea. thanks!
