I'm trying to make an irrigation system so that I can farm all of my wheat with one pour of one bucket of water.
I made branching paths for the water to take, but the water will only flow in one direction. Is this the way it's supposed to be, or is it a bug in the current version?
In real life, if I put some water on level ground, it's not just going to flow one direction - it's going to flow every direction. But that's not the case in my world...
It can be random sometimes especially if your dump area is small and then opens up to wider blocks.
Have you checked YouTube for "Auto Harvesting"? When the Beta 1.7.3 update comes out in a few days it will be possible to use the piston form of auto harvesting.
Look at my videos for Minecraft Liquid Physics. I explain all that stuff. To answer your specific question: When given one choice to go downhill within 6 spaces of the source block, the water will only travel in a straight line toward that drop off.
UPDATE: I kept running into problems while building an irrigation system, so I've decided to change my plan.
Instead of building an irrigation system, I'm just elevating each of the wheat platforms so that water runs all the way down them. It's more work, but it's the only design that will function correctly. It will also allow me to use pistons to automatically harvest the wheat.
Sorry if this is off topic but I think it's the best place for me to ask this.
Is the water really needed at all or does it provide benefits?
I just have a square of soil on the roof of my house with no water, stuff grows fine.
Water is as essential as anything else in MC. Spend enough time with the game and you will one day want a fountain, or an automatic wheat, reed, or cactus farm. Water will be essential for these. It also makes a decent last resort weapon. If you find yourself battling baddies in a cave and need to get away, dump a bucket of water down to sweep either you or the baddies away.

Add me on xbox live - Zeltchoron so I can show you my automated wheat farm. I you wish to see it that is. Then later I would help you set up your own.

Wheat grows faster if the dirt is wet
