Trying to break the monotony here. Just a simple topic.
When you generate a new world, how fast do you decide whether or not you're going to play on it? Do you explore it a bit first or do you just take in what you see in the immediate area.
I like to walk around a bit first. Our current multiplayer world with a few friends is a perfect case in point. It had a pretty crappy spawn area, we built up a shelter (it was the first time any of my friends played on hard difficulty so we didn't take any chances getting lost in the dark), after a few days of getting on our feet we went out and explored and found two beautiful, and I do mean beautiful, valleys. Both of them had waterfalls and flat ground to build in.
Needless to say we moved our base of operations but to answer your question McAngus, I do like to at least give the world a chance, just because you see a sprawling desert at spawn doesn't mean you won't find the holy grail of Minecraft terrain just over the hillside.
I usualy keep whatever world I get, unless I wind up spawning in a jungle. Jungles are neat, but I usually don't like to make houses there, and I usualy build my house near spawn.
I kept the first world I started. I wasn't looking for anything specifically when first starting out. I was happy once I finally explored it all that it contained a good mixture of ocean, forest, and snow areas. It also contained reeds, cacti, and pumpkins. It also had a perfect place for my house, with a big mountain, and below it a closed off valley. When I start my next world I do plan on exploring it all first, before deciding to keep it.
I usually find a nice, open patch of land and plop my house right on top of it.
It dosen't really take long for me to find a good biome to settle down in.
Now that I think about it, I've never actually generated a world. I always go to Minecraft Seeds and browse until I find something epic, or flat, depending on what my plans are for the world.
I wander around on peaceful looking for a variety of stuff. Cactus, sugarcane, all three types of trees, etc. I like to know I'm going to have as many possibilities as I can. If I decide to play it I'll reload on normal and away i go.

Give a man fire and he's warm for a day, light a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
I have my primary world, which is basically the second one I ever generated. It has a nice mix of terrain and items (sugarcane, cactus, etc.) and I'm quite happy with it. (I lost my very first world with the update, but we won't go into that.) I will generate new worlds when I just want to take a break from my primary world and just go exploring different scenery for a bit. Sometimes they are random and sometimes they are from the lists. However, I haven't created any of these worlds with the intention of playing in them for very long and, so far, I haven't become attached to any of them. I usually stay in them around 30 minutes, walking around the map and exploring the occasional cave and then I'll exit and delete them.

Other than that, I like the spawn area to look nice too
