Does anyone feel like using mob traps is wrong? I built mine and have been using it for days and it is really just the same as using a dupe glitch, considering I have a chest full of every mob drop. I love having all the tnt or bonemeal I need. As someone who has played a long time, I still don't know how I feel about them. Either way... I won't stop using it since it was a pain to build.
Side note... 4j needs more credit for working diligently on this port. They've done a great job.
I don't get much from my grinder as I used to so what I have is mostly from hunting and killing enemies randomly. Theres nothing wrong with using it, especially since there is no creative mode. And its nothing like the dupe glitch.
I guess in a way it's sortof "like" a dup glitch, but not nearly the same. A glitch is an exploitable bug, something that isn't supposed to happen. A mob trap is simply taking advantage of the mechanics of the game, that are actually meant to be there.
All in all, I don't see a problem with it. A dup glitch takes a minute or two to get a full inventory of stacks, the production of any mob trap doesn't come close to that. And building a mob trap at least takes effort, some large, advanced mob traps can take several hours to build.

Using a grinder is, to me, an exploit of existing game mechanics. It's not a cheat code; it's something you have to actually figure out how to build and then build. (Hats off to whoever made the first one. He/she's a genius.) I have no qualms about using one. If the game designers wanted them out, they'd simply make it so that mobs wouldn't spawn on player-placed blocks. Since the people who wrote the game seem to be cool with it, what's the problem?
The dupe glitch, however, is a bug. It's not meant to be there, and using it is basically cheating. Once you've got one of each of the resources from underground... well, then what's the point of going underground ever again? And what game are you then playing? Whatever it is, it's not Minecraft. Besides that, it glitches or crashes entire save files. More than once I've had the following type of convo:
Them: Why can't I get into the nether / load my save/ etc..?
Me: Did you use the dupe glitch in this world?
Them: Um.... yeah...
Me: Well, that's why. You corrupted your save. Time to start over.
Them: But that's not Faaaaiiiiirrr !
Me: Neither is using the dupe glitch.
But a grinder? That's just a construct that takes advantage of (exploits) knowing how mobs spawn. It actually takes work, planning, and thought. Besides that, the only truly useful stuff coming out (in this version) is the gunpowder and string. No big deal. I doubt they'll ever come up with a mob that drops diamonds.
every game has a way to farm mobs for drops and i mean every game .. this is minecrafts..
it takes a bit of brainpower and effort to build a mob grinder and i love mine .. though they do survive if i put water down which sucks no way to get the loot other than running out and letting them fall on my head hehe
Try using a lava blade... which, btw, is another example of an exploit of existing game mechanics, not a bug.
I would agree an exploit of the game mechanics. The developers hate them, thats why they're always changing the mobs AI, like with how mobs would walk over a hole with a sign placed or trapdoor thinking it was a solid block.
There is nothing wrong with using a mob trap. It's basically an emergent mechanic from the way the game was designed. Notch was fully aware adding things like spawners and mob spawning varaibles would allow people to farm them.
An exploit is an exploit no matter how you look at it.
If your grinder is killing enemies that's one thing, but if it's just setting them up for you to cut them all down it's different all together. The dupe glitch doesn't boost leaderboard scores, killing 1000's of enemies does. So if anything, in my eyes, exploiting mob spawns for kills is worse than duping.
I see no problem with either mob grinding or duping. Not that I personally dupe myself, but some people want creative mode now, and have a neat little bug that allows them to. Save file corruption seem like a personal risk, and duping still involves more efort than creative mode, there's no flying and you still have to mine your original materials. *shrug*

Pretty sure that's not how it works... I believe you have to actually kill the mobs yourself to count for leaderboard score. Besides, nobody even cares about the leaderboards.
Seriously, this thread is starting to get ridiculous. I made a minnow trap last weekend, am I exploiting life?
EDIT: Just read that better, didn't know you were more or less talking about an XP grinder.
As for the dupe glitch, if you're using it for limited resources you're going to use to build, that's legit imo. I mined all the redstone I could find in my map and was maybe 20% done with my project. You think I'm gonna be like "Oh, out of resources, time to abandon 10 hours of work." hell no!
I did kinda cheat, using it for colored wool too... but come on... 100+ stacks of wool, and all the dyes? That would've taken a whole year in Minecraft time.
Personally I refuse to use any sort of glitch or exploit. In terms of which is worse I'm totally down with crucifying just about any glitcher I come across (most of the time). Anyway I would have to agree that the Mob Grinder is an exploit and not a glitch and also that it is something you had to work hard for. I don't like ones that boost you on the leaderboard since some people do care about that. I'm cool with them in general, although I'll never use them. I find that they take some of the fun away and the sense of "earning' things when I use them.

mob traps are totally legit you know frankly they take more "skill" than duping so mob traps FTW
I think mob traps are more entertaining and gaming and no where near an exploit. Using game environment is leagues away from bugs, glitches, mods or exploits. Eventually my mob trap will feed a petting zoo or be part of a player trap (room filled with mobs). With pistons I'll have even more options. Basically it is just another thing to do.
These videos where you see 800 or 1000 items dropped an hour... You do realize that most of those are created in creative mode on pc. It takes a lot of resources to make a such an effective mob grinder. I built my mob tower by digging up a mountain, collecting resources instead of laying them down. It's just a standard 16 x 16, five floors. Close to my house I plan on using as part of a little "security" feature.
I don't know if were talking about the morals of using the game world rules to collect item drops or the fact I'm building a mob torture chamber.
Certainly mobs have tortured me, and I doubt they have such debates.
Zombie, "It burns me that he's building that house. Clear as day it's over the property line."
Creeper, "Relax, I'll go over and discuss the matter."

Glitches are out-smarting the game, do you see a problem with the duplication glitch?
