I'm wondering if i can play my current world, even after the next update with pistons comes in? Or will it just not have the updated features in it?
My understanding is that updates that do not alter the map (add material, dungeons, etc...) do not require a new map to have them. changes to the map will occur in unexplored areas only.
So yes you will have pistons in your current world.
Since the addition of pistons shouldn't affect terrain, you should be able to play your old world with pistons.
If there's any terrain upgrades/changes, yes, you'll have to start a new world to see them.
There was a question about if there's any terrain changes (i.e. the "clay" question)- would they show up in unexplored territory? I'm pretty sure 4J confirmed that the whole map was generated at the start (clay wouldn't have magically appeared in old worlds), so any terrain upgrades=new world.

I found some large clay deposits on a previously unexplored section of my map after the update, nowhere near the x=z line.

Yea but didnt it turn out to be that clay did in fact generate in unexplored areas of the world after the clay update?

If you didnt explore a section of land in your maps then yes, it would alter the terrain. If the terrain has already been generated then nothing about it will change. However items such as pistons and shears dont alter the terrain and are craftable so you're free to craft them all you want in any world.

Great news then, i was wondering if i should wait until the new update sometime this week and start a new world.

They actually confirmed that new stuff WOULD show up in unexplored areas. Maps are NOT fully generated at the start of a new world.
