So when the update hits my friends and i are going to create a new map. The 4 of us play regularly together with a 5th and 6th person joining us on occasion.
What we want to do is divide the map evenly into about 16 parts. We each "Claim" a part and that is our kingdom. No other player is allowed to enter the border of your kingdom(and we are friends so we will uphold the rules).
the extra 12 regions are nuetral(unless another player joins and claims an area".
I was wondering what rules we should come up with for the map. Lets assume that all people involved will obey the rules.
The ones i have so far are:
1) No entering another persons kingdom without permission.
2) No destroying another persons chests directly.
3) No attacking another player in their kingdom under any reason.
A few other things i was thinking of
- only allowed to enter another kingdom without permission if you have no items on you. No tools, no items, no anything. This is SPY mode. (it is up to the kingdom owner to make sure you cannot enter without tools)
- No disabling redstone devices by breaking wires or adding a redstone torch to mess up the circuits in their kingdom(in neutral land this is allowed)
- No taking blocked resources like gold/diamond blocks.
- Only allowed to take items out of someone elses chests in spy mode.
- no destroying blocks placed by others in neutral areas.
- No destroying train tracks in neutral areas(but you can put blocks above them to kill the passenger)
These are a few ideas i have, i am not set on any of them and open to others ideas. The biggest thing is i want to be able to take over a neutral area but im not sure how i would do that....
I think honestly man, for the neautral territories we should have battles over them. For example, if two people want the same territory they just battle it out and to the victor go the spoils, as many people that want to can battle for a neutral territory, and all kingdoms are declared safe for the duration of the battle...equipment traps and weapons allowed or not depending on host.
Okay victor wins. but is this now considered your kingdom or can others still attack it and take it over? What if the person keeps coming back over and over trying to take it back?
Yeah its over live, and TwistedDragon i think they should have to announce their intent to seize the territory and have them recieve some sort of disadvantage, but only in the neutral territories, not the main kingdoms. For example, give the defending king (or queen), 5 minutes to set up whatever they want for defense and then let the aggressor try to retake it. Obviously it'll take a little fine tuning but, i tihnk rules like the aggressor can't implement tnt or no diamond weapons would be a good touch.as an aside i think everything in neutral territory should be constantly hostile, and the defender should have a certain amount of time to get to his defending point, and if he can't get there its considered annexed. Or maybe have it so if they die trying to take a neutral territory (defended or undefended) they cant try for another full day real time. So it would befit any reigning player to already have traps and tricks placed in their neutral territory to dissuade any would be invaders.
That works for me. I was also thinking about only making your kingdom a set dimensions and the rest of the map not divided up into regions. So you have to slowly encroach on the area you intend to take over without it having a set border.
I dunno how it would work, but what if, each neutral territory had a 3x2 flag made of white wool sitting on a 2 high fence post. likewise each kingdom has their own wool flag made of their own color/design. when someone claims a territory, they replace the white flag with one of their own kingdom. In order to capture an enemy territory, the attacker needs to destroy the enemy flag and place their own without dying. players arent allowed to move the flags. I have more ideas, but i gotta go for a bit, if you like this, Ill be back on a little later with the rest of my ideas.
I like the flag idea i think we should implement that also. Now the only problem im having is mapping out the individual neutral territories and what to do if one kingdoms cave system goes into another.

Well, when caving, if it's a particularly large and confusing one, I carry 2 stacks of wool in different colors, and place them next to each other at branches. The white one always points to the exit, the off color next to it is there to determine that direction.
If you use the wool flag idea, how about using your "flag color" to mark your cave systems? Drop your color every 20 blocks or so; If you stumble into someone elses's mine/cave, just retreat to the point you entered, and drop your "marker". If the other party agrees to this demarcation line, they drop their color next to it on their side, and voila, you have a border.
Kinda like the way wolves pee on opposite sides of a tree to mark their territorial boundaries.
yeah, you'd have to do something like that, dunno how else you would solve that.
Instead of having each person be their own kingdom, why not have 4-5 set kingdoms and let people choose which they'd like to belong to. That way you could have 3v3 battles for territory, as opposed to 1v1 duels. There should also be wilderness areas that cannot be claimed by anyone. it would be a kind of free-for-all area. That way people could choose not to ally with any of the kingdoms and just do their own thing.

Kind of like the setup on the PC server Pixisles. Two opposing kingdoms at perpetual war... join one or neither... sounds neat. I might do that on one of my maps. Set up "reserved" areas for the opposing sides with lots of neutral space in the middle, that can be "claimed" by neutrals or one of the kingdoms (but only if it's contiguous to that kingdom). Eventually, they'll start bumping up against each other in the center, and we'll have to have one of those DMZ shacks with two opposing doors, like they do on the Korean border, lol.

I would join something like that. It would be interesting to make the conquer aspect turnbased. as in every kingdom gets one "move" per period. a move would consist of either attacking an enemies territory, or claiming a neutral one. that would eliminate any sort of mad rush in the beginning to acquire territories. The length of the period can be something like once a day, or as soon as every kingdom uses up their move.

Yeah... the host would have to set up the whole map first. Clearly marked sections (64x64 maybe?), say a tall pillar with torches marking the corners. The starting points for the kingdoms would be bordered by a fence? Claim an area by fencing in between the pillars, and then you can knock out your old fence, so that the land is "open" to the new borderline. I like the turn thing, but how about making the rule that a kingdom can only claim one new area every 24 hours, real time... midnight to midnight GMT?
Edit: Duh, I think we're on the same page for the turn thing. I thought you meant one kingdom went, then the next turn the other goes, etc. I'm thinking they can both claim one area each 24 hour period.

Yea, Im not saying they need to go in sequence or anything, just that everybody needs to take their turn before someone could go again.
setting up the map would definitely be time consuming. 64x64 would be a good size, imo. Maybe make the starting territories for each kingdom a little bigger, not sure how cramped the starting areas could get.
Another thought. What about limiting the renewable resources for each territory. something like 1 tree farm, 2 wheat fields, when breeding is released, limit the number of passive animals you can keep penned, etc. And prohibit mob grinders. mob grinders make it far too easy to stockpile arrows/tnt.

Good idea. Kingoms start with... oh, like 3 sections, at opposite corners. Limited arable land, limited corral space, and to expand you'd need new land. Mineral rights underground belong to the owner of the section, another good motivator.
Without a moderator who has a "god mode", this'd be kind of hard to enforce, no? I've made underground wheat farms & such...
yeah, it would. but this whole thing is going by honor-code anyway. trusting people not to steal all your stuff or mine all your valuable ore out from underneath your feet lol
and yeah, I agree that territory lines should extend all the way to bedrock
We started our little world as a test run and we are already getting problems with some things. After some play time we should be able to sort through the problems and start a true map eventually. So far the things we have eliminated:
Spy mode works well, you are only allowed to enter someone elses kindgom with a map only. no other items allowed on you. You are allowed to wear armor. If you are discovered you have to run away you are not allowed to attack back.
We had the ability to steal others items in spy mode, you were only allowed to take half of something, (if they have 10 diamonds you can take 5). However this didnt work well as it was too easy to take peoples stuff. We may enact this again with access to pistons.
We had a rule you were not allowed to place or destroy anything in someone elses kingdom. This made it so if they blocked up the entrance to their house you could not get in. But you could open doors if the switch was accessible. With pistons this could make combo locks needed. I put a 2 high wall around my kingdom so no one could enter.
We need to reevaluate how to take another territory as we never officially made boundaries. It was just accepted where each person was. We may make a less hostile system of taking over an area, such as first to "claim" the area gets it. When an area is in dispute a fight/war will wage. When the outcome is finished the deal is finalized and that is officially part of their kingdom and spy rules aply if you want to invade.
As we play we will come up with more ways to improve it. Also thinking of a peaceful area near the center of the map so we can trade and collaborate on things.

Oooh, that's a good one.
There really should be a *reason* for all this fighting. I'm thinking: mineral rights to the chunk underneath.
