Me and a couple of my friends are trying to find a item we could use for currency, Should it be Gold Ingots?
Gold is practically useless and our only main use for it is powered rail-lines. Not to mention gold kinda brings out the idea of something similar to gold coins, which is used for currency in thousands of games.
Is this a good idea?
I guess it would really depend on what you need but from what ive seen a multi level system works best from what others have said.
Example-
Lupis = 1 credit
Lupis Block = 10 credits
iron ingot= 10 credits
iron block = 100 credits
gold ingot = 50 credits
gold block = 500 credits
Diamond = 200
Diamond Block = 2000
The problem i have seen with a single currency item is you alienate thise that might specifically need only that item. If you make gold the standard you make anyone building large railroads broke. Iron you make almost everyone a little destitute. but if you have a backup like Lupis, Diamond and the like there are very few people who rely on all of those items. So you can be poor in gold and iron if you are making trains a lot but rich in diamonds and lupis.
All pricing examples are just made up on the spot. Those numbers probably wont work well but if it helps you understand what i mean.
I think for your economy to work you need total control over your currency,basing it on something other people can collect will lead to inflation.
The best one i have seen so far was using paper they collected all sugar cane and created secret farm to make more,players are then given stack of paper when they join and work for more.This system would require some sort of central bank to run economy.
A lot of people use paper, and that could work if you control all of the world's Sugarcane. A secret farm could control all printing. I wouldn't prefer this because money has to be given to start the cycle, but that's just my two cents. (because we are in a thread about coinage! lololol)
However, I created the active Bullion-Credit system. It translates the precious metals into something known as "credits". I assume TwistedDragon33 must have adopted some of it for his currencies' mindset.
The rarity uselessness of the auriferous metal and the useful commonness of the silver metal even each other out into a nearly perfect system. 1/10 credits are restored when the bars are transformed into a Block for maximum amenity. All public railroads are provided by the government. If you or any of your friends want to trade, you can make a public Commerce Center. You could become rich by spending all of your time mining, but you could also still gain that amount of wealth equally from spending a lot of time with your job in your server.

Thats actually a really good idea.
