From what I understand, beds need to be in a shelter that has a light source, and have to be placed at least two spaces away from the "outside", with the wall counting as one space.
I did that, but for some reason, I kept getting killed in my sleep. I thought the issue might be the fact that the door might not count as an entire block, and that even though the bed was one block away from the door, that the door might count as "less" than one block, which might be causing the glitch.
My original shelter worked just fine. The glitch was with a new, temporary shelter I had made near a mine I was expolring. I had tried to make a shelter that fit the bare minimum requirements to keep me safe. The new shelter was very minimal, but from what the wiki page said, it should have worked just fine. Is there a game mechanic that could be causing the issue, or is it just a glitch?
Also, every time I got attacked, my character just lied on the bed until he died. I guess it was glitch caused by the fact that the roof was only two block spaces above me, which made my character unable to "get up" after getting attacked and leaving me defenseless, so I always died.
Then suddenly, the glitch just stopped. It stopped right after I equipped my sword fior some reason (I kept reloading my save point to try and see what was wrong with my shelter through trial and error).
But the glitch just "stopped" because it was replaced by a different , more convenient glich. Now, I can place my bed literally anywhere and have my character sleep just fine. But I can literally place my bed out in the field, with no light or walls whatsoever, and still be able to sleep just fine.
I'm assuming both of those issues are glitches. Though I'm wondering what exactly is causing those issues. It's not a one time thing either, the second glitch where I can place my bed out in the open and still sleep occurred in a new game I made, so it's either a recurring glitch, or some kind of game mechanic I'm misunderstanding.
The original glitch might be if you had two doors next to each other, one of them counts as open or something along those lines so mobs can get in even if they're both shut. As for the second one, I have no idea.
Nope, I didn't have two doors next to each other. Like I said, it was a temporary shelter shelter that barely met the minimum requirements of what should be "safe". But it still should have worked, there was no reason for it not to. I was thinking that maybe i was doing something wrong, but now I'm pretty sure the game was just glitching out.
It was annoying that a perfectly good shelter wasn't working, but now I have the exact opposite issue issue where I can literally leave a bed anywhere and have my character still be able to sleep on it. It kind of takes away from of the "survival" aspect of the game.
as far as im aware its possibe to place a bed anywhere, its just if you try to sleep in a bed in the open theres a higher chance you'll get attacked in the night.
whenever im exploring the surface i take a bed with me and just place it as soon as it starts getting dark and its usually safe to sleep as long as you start sleeping bfore it gets totaly dark.
That might be it, but I doubt it.
I was sleeping in a perfectly good shelter, but I kept getting killed in my sleep. I kept reloading my save, and the same thing kept happening. Then I equipped my sword, and then the glitch stopped happening, which I thought was weird. Then, out of curiosity, I tried placing my bed outside, and my character was able to sleep through the night.
I doubt the time of day had anything to do with it, since I kept reloading my save, all of those glitches happened at around the same "time" of day.
I think your roof is too low, I vaguely recall having a similar problem where if my shelter was two-blocks high, I'd wake up and suffocate to death. Since the bed is .5 blocks high, your total height would be 2.5, putting your head into the blocks above. Try increasing the height of the shelter where your bed is and see if that fixes your problem.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, that when you wake up in this case, you usually end up standing on your bed, for whatever reason.
no, what i meant was, creatures attacking you inside while you sleep IS a bug, but being able to place your bed outside isn't.
I havn't been effected by the being attacked while sleeping inside but some people that have said that moving the door to another wall can help, and also not using double doors.

That must have been it.
I think you're both right. I guess sleeping in a bed with a roof that was too low was causing me to suffocate. Though for some reason, the glitch stopped. I can use the same shelter just fine now. It must have been a temporary glitch, for me at least.
And I guess using a bed outdoors is just a normal game mechanic. Though I'm still a bit confused about that, since I thought that in 1.6.6 you needed to build a shelter in order to make your bed safe.

The requirements you listed for a bed are non valid... Like people said, you can sleep anywhere BUT the nether... In the nether you will explode...
You NEED to build a shelter to be SAFE while sleeping, if you sleep outside. Monsters can attack you, but you have to press LT to get up so you can kill them.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

I'm playing on 360.
