So i have done google searches, Youtube searches, and forum searches as well. I'm sorry if this has been asked before and if so please link me.
I'm interested in making a playable character spawn trap or "holder" (only players who are first time to the server) like everyone else. Except I don't wanna dupe or mine a lot of obsidian. What I want to do is something made from cobblestone filled in with lava. On top of the lava will be a glass platform that is maybe 5 blocks away from any wall, so you can't reach it. The only option would be mine the glass platform which will thus drop you into lava, unless someone lets you out.
Now I've seen these in videos, but is there any way to find where the 20x20 or 36x36 that players spawn in without signing in a guest over and over? Or is there some equation I may work out? Or should I just make sure to clear out a more than sufficient space?
Thanks for any advice and if anyone has a link to anything useful I'll look at it.
Thanks again.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
The way I found my 20x20 player spawn area was to turn on controller 2, sign in to split screen mode using a guest account that I created in 2 seconds, and kill the guest with my main player and then every time the guest spawned, I placed a block of wool on that spot. Eventually, after I had enough blocks placed, I could count and see the outer limits of the 20x20 area easily.
I decided not to do a prison tho. Everybody I know has a spawn prison. I decided to go the opposite route. My spawn is a flat area carved into the side of a mountain, and the first thing a new player sees is a wall of chests surrounding them. I placed every available item in the game at the spawn, double chests full of 64 blocks of all items... from every color of wool to cocoa beans to the green and yellow CD's that can be played in the jukebox. I even put TNT there which might be a tragic mistake. haha Dupe glitch for the win.
P.S. My friends built their spawn prisons using the compass (so they tell me). Apparently the compass showns the spawn area. But I hate the compass, I find it useless and never use one. You might want to give that a look. They also made their spawn areas too large (40x40) for some reason. I read the wiki that said 20x20 is sufficient and that's what my experience has shown me.

Although I think that's an awesome idea, some players are definitely jerks and I'm anti-duping. But good alternative, I must admit.
