Agreed with this post, it sounds to me like it could be your cables. A far less expensive solution would be to test your set up with different cables, if it persists then it will be the xbox. A software issue sounds unlikley, as many many many others would have the same issue if it was.
If it is the xbox, ouch, i am sorry ;(
Good luck!
i'll take the component cables from my other xbox and see if it works correctly. i hope it's just the cables!
I've had this happen to me a couple times, well the small black line part, but it's only happened a couple times. I think it's just a random bug in the game or something.
i'm not really having the problem anymore. i didn't change my cables, but i made sure the cables already plugged into my tv are plugged properly. they were. i haven't changed anything and the game is working fine now, just a few lines here and there but not nearly as bad as it has been. maybe it was just a weird thing that went away. i don't know. hopefully nothing explodes any time soon.

well this is reassuring. as odd as it sounds, i'm glad someone else is having the same problem. i would rather it be a bug than my tv going out or my xbox getting ready to red ring.
You mentioned component cables. Is that what you're using when the picture goes funky?
You should occasionally twist the cable connectors themselves. You don't have to unplug/plug (sometimes this is a huge hassle with component cables) but just give them a little twist. Sometimes, the cables will oxidize at the connections themselves and a good twist or two will make a better connection.

call me a dumbass, but how do i delete the system cache? are you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY POSITIVE it won't delete anything?
Deleting the system cache won't delete your saves, but you will have to re-download the patches and stuff. You can also try deleting the game from the System menu and re-downloading it.
I would say to try the simple stuff first - twist the cables, replace the cables, try another Xbox or device (DVD player?) with the same TV and cables, etc. If you have more than 1 component-in on your TV, move it over to the other one.
