I dont get the point of themes. Its not like you spend your entire time on the dashboard.
It's just for display purposes; even if it's only for a few moments, it has a lavish look to it. Same reason when people add skins to their Xbox or controllers. Why have it if you don't look at them all day long?
I personally like themes. I have the Iron theme, and honestly after i followed the link in the twitter feed I fell in love with the looks. It makes my xbox more personal to me.

Then you can use the same reason for dashboard themes then. I know quite a lot of themes that are free whether you have the game or not.
I don't know anyone who looks at a controller while they play, unless they've never played an Xbox before (or you can't figure out the difference between the trigger and bumper buttons several times a day). Not trying to make counter-arguments here, just voicing a viewpoint like you are.
Besides, those MC themes look pretty good actually. Simple, but variety of things you'll encounter in game w/ different colours.
