So I'm doing "furniture" for my house in MC, and I'm wondering is it possible to make a table? The most common design I've seen is a pressure plate on top of a fence post, but that doesn't work. Half slabs are way too thick and make it ugly. What else is there?
Put a dirt block and then a pressure plate one top. Remove the dirt block and put a fence post in. Hope it help. Never mind. I tried it and remembered (then) that the dirt block is the like host block.
I've been in the same boat. One other idea is if the table is against a wall at least 2 blocks high you can use a trap door "closed" over a fence post. Otherwise i've used slabs as coffee tables.
Oh... and another furniture idea i use is making a TV by placing a painting on the front of a rectangle of black wool. Use trapdoors in the open position to make more decorative cabinets, etc. Just some extra ideas.
I use a wooden plank or a log and put a wooden pressure plate on the top. Try putting a fence down and then use a wooden trap door on a wall right next to it and out the pressure plate down. The only downside is it has to be up against a wall and you cant put cake on it :/

Like the others of said, once 1.7.3 is released you can use pistons to create a nice table.
