I'm just noticing this is happening to me i wondered if others are having a similar problem. When i started my map i created a small house and started a mine off a room in my house...
Well after mining all of the incredibly awesome caves that seem to go forever in my map(seed 8675309), and building up a good stockpile of things i just realized last night that i haven't had to mine for a single resource except sand(to make more glass) and cobble(to make more stone) in weeks...
Even after building a giant 12 destination rail station with switch tracks, multiple mob grinders of different types. Slime grinders. 1 giant complete complex(my house with storage), a giant fortress, elevated rail tracks with lights and covering with pylons holding them up across the map. a Cathedral, temple, castle, house, lighthouse, experimentation field(for testing redstone things), and giving away items to friends jumping on my game(and people taking stuff so i have since hidden it better), i still have a ridiculous amount of iron, gold, diamonds, and coal. I had so much iron(even after making the 1,000+ pieces i needed to complete my rail station), that i had to store it in iron blocks instead of ingots to preserve room...
Now i realize that sounds like bragging but its more of a time invested situation. I'm just concerned that after a week or so of collecting things i have been able to coast on them for a long time. Don't get me wrong my map has a lot of really nice caves so exploring and finding minerals was very quick but i'm concerned that there is going to be a point where i wont need to mine any more. I will have all the materials i need stored and ready and i will be running out of things to do. My storage area already has almost everything i could need for any major project, even a few major projects. This is after 3-4 weeks of the same map and only mining for about 1 week. What is it going to be like when we get the next update and people are playing on the same map for months.
So I'm curious what others are doing to keep interested in mining. Obviously bigger maps if they ever come out will be handy for new areas to explore. And new craftable items would be nice but i feel i will fall into the same problem, finding something to do out of boredom.
My main goal while mining is dungeon hunting. That's what I look for. Of course, finding diamonds and other precious materials are fun too.
I do a lot of mining over building though because I'm OCD about symmetry when building something and with larger builds thats rough to keep track of, so I try to stay away from that when I can.
In 1.8.2 (aka Adventure Update) they'll be adding naturally generated mineshafts, strongholds, & ravines. So that should help to keep interest in mining/cave exploring. But yeah, there is only so much you can do.

Yeah i havent read much about the adventure update. I hope it is as good as people say. The new things to discover in the world would be great.
As i said... you can only mine so much until it becomes fairly pointless. How many stacks of diamonds do i need? as long as i have enough for a few diamond tools i consider myself well stocked. How many houses do i need? So far at about 7 i consider myself pretty well set in the housing situation... so now i am set to build things, but until newer craftable items come in i have a severe limitation on what they can be. And even after they are in i can still only have so many houses without it becoming redundant. I'm concerned i will over mine my map as well so when others join a lot of natural caves are already mined out so they have to quarry and strip mine.

I don't understand why this was even said... i don't think i made any comment that could even be considered such... but i guess no?
