Okay, so both my roomate and I have Minecraft for Xbox (played on PC since Alpha). He's pretty high up on the leaderboards right now and as a result, he has people joining his games that aren't on his friends list, nor has he ever played with them before (he just got an xbox for minecraft... doesn't own any other games). How they're doing it, I'm not sure. I'm guessing they browse the leaderboards and eventually catch someone that's online and able to jump into the game that way?
Anyway...as you can guess, they only jump into the game to destroy his stuff. He's smart about it and usually saves the game manually when someone new jumps in, just in case, but so far, out of the 5 people or so that have done it, every single one (100%) has decided to start messing up his stuff.... pouring lava down, attacking him/us, etc.
So we had the idea to booby-trap the original spawn location. We tried putting lava down, but get the warning message.
So we just poured lava down further away, and have it go downhill so it reached the original spawn location. The problem with this is that it randomly selects a 'new' spawn location that wont kill you. Is this done on the fly? Or does the game only use "x" blocks by "x" blocks as the 'spawn'? So in theory, if you could cover enough area, you'll have no choice but to spawn in said lava.
The other idea was to build a large pad out of Obsidian, 1 block high, and completely removed 20-30 blocks below and around it. So when someone spawns, they'll be stuck on this pad... the only way off is to jump (to their death).
just for the recond, I know that you can turn the server to invite only, but that takes all the fun out of griefing the griefers
Ah, I love booby-trapping the spawn for unexpected guests...what I did was create a little railway to a vast open area (keep in mind, the spawn point was a 10x10 room of obsidian and I made the tunnel [obsidian] encasing the tracks). Then I cut off the track so it would go spiraling down a lava pit. No way to jump out, no time to stop, nada. Of course I had to keep creating minecarts, but it was so worth it.
My friends told me of a way to just trap people its not fun for them so they have to leave. Make a big moat of lava around said spawn point the only way off is for a current resident to make a bridge to them. Plus you can throw poop at them or something.

You can throw eggs or snowballs or shoot them with arrows trying to knock them off.
I just made a room about 20x20x10 out of obsidian. I did not put any door, window, torch, or anything useful. My plan was to just have them be trapped but instead I had mobs spawning inside the hut and I kept hearing explosions whenever someone joined. It was effective...
So, you can make man made mob spawners? Please explain

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

yeah i also need ideas i put a cobble square around the spawn zone the placement was lava=L cobble=C spawn=S
LCSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSCL
thats an estimated number of bricks between cobble and cobble but its pretty much in a giant square but my diamond pick broke so what i was thinking about doing instead of making floor of obsidian is just to make lava go as far down as i can i.e bedrock and i would have the part underneath the spawn hollow so they dig one block they fall to lava
thats a good idea but who would really want to use so much time collecting enough netherrack to cover the spawn and then waste iron lighting it all
Netherrack only takes less than a second to mine and you would probably need 6 just to cover around the spawn block (enough to engulf the player on fire)
Plus, you need Flint and Steel to light a portal anyway and iron ore is really not that rare so really its not a waste.
i had a plan where what u would do is build a giant wall up and put a roof on it and put lava on top well when ever u place a block under the lave it will move further than its supposed to engulfing the entire spawn in lava

i checked my spawn and if i counted correctly it is 33X33 a perfect square and to find the area of a square u multiply side 1 (33) by side 2 (also 33) meaning i have a spawn area of 1089 blocks (used calculator to figure it out faster) and flint and steel only gets 65 uses according to minecraft wiki which 1089 divided by 65 is equal to 363 flint and steel think about which is better lave around spawn or 1089 nether rack and 363 flint and steel

Well, you only need to cover the spawn big enough to make the player catch o fire and it would be much easier to find the one block spawn with a compass.

well u see my spawn zone is by a ocean plus wat i did was i kept placing lave untill i could finally place it with it staying into a giant square

Apparently people hate that.

Here is what our spawn protection looks like:
