I've been reading in the forums for just for the hell of it, and I've seen many people going on about ram and memory and all that. Being a person whose only real knowledge about computers is how to browse the Internet, I did a little research, I was looking at the system requirements for being able to play the game on the computer and I looked at the ram. The minimum requirements for ram is about 500mb to play the game, but Not to full potential. And As I researched I thought I might want to look at ram for the Xbox and I saw that the Xbox has about 512mb I think. but correct me if I'm wrong which i probably am, I know that my computer isn't the best, I can't run minecraft with full settings i ran it with the minimum requirements, and it ran pretty fine not the best but ok. And the world was as big as the world if it had been running with full requirements, now seeing that Xbox is pretty much a computer with the minimum requirements for playing minecraft, wouldn't it be possible to make the world a bit larger.
Now I'm not saying endless, maybe just a bit larger than it is, I personally think the map on PC is to large, and a person who plays the game casually, would probably never explore the entire map, and I doubt even the hardcore fans of the game probably wouldn't either. I've watched video of people playing the game and I hardly see them building to far, they are usually building in one large area, and using all these weird gadgets.
Feel free to say how wrong I am, chew me out as much as you want, I'm no computer wiz kid.
I'm not exactly a computer genius either, but I can tell you that RAM actually has little to do with how big the world is. RAM is the information that the game currently has in memory, the chunk you're in, information on surrounding chunks, and changes happening near you. RAM is what allows a game to write chunk information to save and then 'forget' it once you're out of range, and call other saved chunks (or seed algorithm for building unexplored areas as you approach them for the first time) from saved memory (ROM). At any time, only a minimum of your world is actually in memory, the rest of it is unrendered and remains so until you move toward those areas.
The real problem here is the size of the save file, and the restrictions that Microsoft has in place (apparently save files are not to be more than 52 MB?) Even though the RAM can use less memory, the information is still stored in the save file, and the bigger the world gets, the bigger that save file is. Not even the PC minecraft worlds are truly infinite for this reason. (I mean sure, tens of millions x tens of millions is more than anyone would ever use in one world, but still technically finite.)
If 4J can find anyway around this or get some leniency from MS we can get bigger world sizes.
I'm also pretty sure the main reason our worlds are so limited is the save file size. Hell, Minecraft has the biggest save files of all of the games on my Xbox 360. I can add up Skyrim, Batlefield 3, Call of Duty MW3, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, and Halo Reach and all those saves combined don't reach half the size of one of my Minecraft saves.
I'm sure that isn't the only reason why our worlds are so limited, but it's probably one of the main ones.
Well on the twitter feed for 4Jstudios they said they were looking into expanding the world size in 360. I guess they got a few complaints or suggestions whatever you wanna call it(I asked about world size as well) and they did say that. I had no idea that the MC save files were bigger than Skyrim,KOA,BF3,and Halo4. That's crazy. But like I said they did say they were looking into it and see what they're gonna do so only time will tell. Hopefully they can enlarge it though. That would be nice
