I'm still playing in my pre-patch world - the one that I started on the day the game came out. I've spent so much time in this world, so instead of starting a new world to get clay, I went on a clay-hunting expedition in my current world. I took a map, and on every space where the X and Z coordinates matched (as explained in the Minecraft Wiki), I dug straight down.
Due to the clay bug, clay will only appear where the X and Z coordinates match. I searched every single space where these coordinates matched, and even dug straight down in all of these spaces. For those of you wondering, yes, that means I dug a deep diagonal line completely across the map. Anddd...
If you had unexplored areas of your world when the bug fix patch came out, clay could have generated in those areas after the patch if the spawning criteria was met.

I had already explored everywhere =( at least on or near the surface. I'm not going to spend 300+ hours in one world and not explore a lot, you know?
I know your pain, man. I didn't know that you'd be able to find clay in unexplored areas after the patch, so I went and searched the z=x diagonal, and then explored everywhere after I found none. :[

Started a new world though, and didn't look back.
Ditto. On my new map, I'm limiting myself and others from going north and entering the nether. Should be interesting.

Seatbelts are not as confining as Wheelchairs. Buckle up.
If you're really intended on keeping the world and also wanting clay, there is two options..
1: Simply search. I know you already have, but search some more.
2: (Although it is even more heartbreaking,) Cheat. TooManyItems, INVedit, it doesn't matter, but no one will know the difference and at least you know that you put effort into finding the clay beforehand.

The xbox version loads the whole map even if you still haven't explored it all.

I replaced my stone fireplace with a brick one.
Yeah, that sounds like a bad idea.
