YES you will need to start a new world in order to get new biomes and any features that come along with them (like villages)
NO you will not need to start new worlds for things like pistons, shears, stone bricks, etc.
Yes and no. If you have completely explored you world, then yes. If there are still areas on your world that are unexplored then you can find the new things there.
It's just like the clay fix. If you had unexplored areas of your pre-bug fix map, clay could possibly spawn in the unexplored areas if they matched clays spawning criteria.

Sorry buddy, that's wrong. When a world loads on XBox it generates the entire map. Therefore, if you started the world before the update, it WILL NOT generate new clay in unexplored areas. You must start a new world.
This is annoying...I feel like why continue building on your current world if after every update you need to start a new one. And yes I would because I would want the updated goodies and what not.

They were actually right. http://twitter.com/4JStudios/status/217370539566698496
And to answer the question, new terrain updates will require a new world unless you have unexplored parts on your map, new items will not require a new world. This is also assuming they don't expand the maps for any of the updates, which would allow you to get some of the new terrain updates.

^ This...I find it funny people still try to say the xbox generates the entire map upon starting a new world when it's been said multiple times that unexplored areas will contain new stuff.
I'll probably just keep my current world until 1.8, ie when Creative Mode arrives. Then I'll make a new world, re-create my minecart track around the edge, re-build my house and gift myself all the diamonds earned etc.
Once that's all done I'll start exploring
As far as I know you won't be able to switch world back and forth from creative/survival, so this wouldn't really work
Well you never HAVE to start a new world. This update it doesn't matter to much, no biomes are being added, items, or dungeons. Really the only reason to make a new one would be clay so really only restart if you care enough.
You will be able to use pistons in your current world. which is very good.
Personally I'm not making a new world until 1.8 since that's when worlds will actually really change.

are... you... #@$%ing... joking. i've worked so hard on my current world and will have to delete it and create a new one in order to get all of the game's features later on? WOW.

You'll have to start a new one in order to visit villages and to go to jungle and desert biomes fro the new temples, and you'll need to start a new map in order to get a world with strongholds so that you can play the story through to the endboss.
But if you don't care about the story and just want to build, you won't have to worry about starting anew, you'll still get all the fancy craftable/smeltaable blocks and new items.

Just so you know, the stuff they mentioned isn't coming til 1.8.2 (which is not the update coming in July) so it will be while before you actually need a new world for those things.
You DO NOT need to start a new world for 1.7.3 in July. They aren't adding anything that requires a new or unexplored world.
The only time you will need to start a new world is when you have completely explored your old world and they put out an update that has new terrain in it, like 1.8.2.

i know this, but working on a world that will just have to be forgotten about eventually seems a little pointless to me. i want to work on the same world and keep building, making it even better. i don't want to start over every time a significantly large update is released. like, what the hell man?

This is how the cookie crumbles. You can wait for the critical updates to release, so you can build a map to its fullest potential. On the other hand you can just take whats available now and start "practicing" your building and appreciate what has been released from the get-go. Im sure you played Total Miner at some point. same ****, different toilet. You had to abandon all of that work for minecraft.

No. You never even needed to start a new world last update. Exploring new chunks will make the new content for old worldsMy bad, that's only on the PC version. (Just woke up) Xbox version you'll need to start a new one.

What if they increase the map size? There would be unexplored areas for the villages and biomes to generate right?
