I'm in the middle of constructing my version of the Hanging Gardens but I'm still puzzled over how trees and grass work. The plan is to make a multilayered buiilding with terraces on each floor. However what I want to know is if I place dirt on the roof will it eventually grow grass or will I have to make some type of temporary bridge that leads down to the ground.
Also I've noticed Trees seem to be pretty unpredictable at times and I was wondering if it's possible to somehow force them to grow a certain height and width. I'm not exactly sure what the max and minimum dimensions are for trees but any information on this subject would be appreciated.
Yeah you can grow the grass by make a stairway down to the any grass area and it will eventually turn your dirt to grass. And for trees, place one block 6 blocks on top of the sapling depending on how tall you want your trees to be. That will limit their height.
You need to make a stairway of dirt for the grass to grow, it won't show up on its own. As for trees, not quite sure how to limit them, but when the 1.7 update comes out you should be able to shear leaves and build your own trees.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that but I don't know. I get kind of carried away with making everything symmetrical and uniform looking and I think it will turn out better if I let them grow naturally. The only thing I really don't want is those stupid trees with like 20 logs or those short ones that look more like bushes.

Lol yeah tell me about it my friends love chopping down trees and forgetting about the floating leaves in the air. I guess the assume they'll decay eventually but if they don't disappear fast I feel compelled to rush over and chop them all down....I can't stand looking at floating leaves
iF anybody knows how to make a fireplace in a wood house please tell me
I used Lava in a brick fireplace with glass fronts. Netherrack and fire kept setting my wood house on fire. MIght not look as real as netherrack and flames but it has a nice effect.
