It isnt up to 4j how much DLC's cost it is up to Microsoft so its not anyone's fault but Microsoft for wanting skins or texture packs costing money, everything has to pass through Microsoft and they set the prices for EVERYTHING
I agree with the people who are saying that the stuff should be paid for because 4J deserves it. They have to convert all these texture packs, skins, etc from pc to Xbox.
There is one thing you guys have to think about microsoft has power to control how much is put on a DLC or anything for that matter if the companies had power to put a price they could over price what the DLC is worth that would not be good. if 4j did have the power to price DLC then we could get a DLC that is not worth the price.
Person 1: "Hey there, Rob! Say, don't you own that large business?"
Person 2: "Yes, I do own it. Why do you ask?"
Person 1: "I was just hoping that you could spend much of your time and money to do things for me. I won't pay anything, though. I mean, you have already accumulated a profit, so why not just spend some of it on me? You still have some extra, so who cares? If you don't do any of that, I shall criticize and protest your company!"
That's what free downloadable content is.
By the way, this situation is getting a bit too political for my taste on a forum about a video game. Let's just agree, despite how liberal you may or may not be, that this is completely different situation, and it should be treated as such. No matter how much limited wealth 4J Studios may have altogether, you must admit that the aforementioned argument by Person 1 that essentially defines this subject right to the point is 100% absurd.
honestly idc if i have to pay for Mod DLC's because its actually changing the game and how it plays, but i don't think that texture packs and skins are really that game changing and shouldn't be charged because they are just visual changes
That's because all the skins and texture packs were user-created content as a hobby, as was said before.. Anything we get on the Xbox would be created by 4J and tested by Microsoft, there's a lot of jobs there that have to be paid for.
I am more than happy to pay for any DLC they make. Try to not forget that all of that 'free stuff' you get on PC is user made content, not official content made by Mojang. Now on the xbox, 4J will have to make every single piece of DLC, as such they are working and deserve to be paid.
In fact I HOPE that they charge for all DLC since nothing will encourage them to keep make more like a steady stream of cash rolling in.
It's sad that I agree with you. Why? Because money is gonna be the biggest motivator. It shouldn't be that way. This game should be a passion for 4J... and I don't think skins are that hard to code into the game. It's just an easy way to get a quick buck.
Im not ok with paying for skin DLC. It takes a minimum of at least 1 hour to make a decent skin on the PC and you can make it for FREE. If they really do charge for skin DLC, it should not be priced for over a dollar for all 40+ skins. More than likely most of the 40 skins will just be recolors of the same skin.
The problem with that is some kid would create a skin that closely resembles a copyrighted character (Mario for example) and then 4J would be screwed. You know how quick Nintendo or Sony would jump at the chance to slap a lawsuit on 4J?

I'm sure making games is everyones passion that works for 4J but that doesn't mean they should work for free. It's not necessarily a motivator in this case because they need that money to keep the game afloat for the next several months and to invest in future games. Contrary to what you might believe it does cost money to develop a game and market it to everyone...
Yeah they made a profit in the first 24 hours...so what? We paid a lousy 20 bucks for a game and practically got them working for free over the next several months since title updates don't cost us anything. Meanwhile they got salaries, rent, advertising, and other bills piling up and we're complaining about a couple lousy MS points? Come on now...I'm sure $2-3 isn't going to break the bank...

I'm guessing we'll see the 240 point price slapped on each of the texture packs but I could be wrong...At any rate I believe that's a fair price because if they really wanted to be greedy they could have easily split that 40+ skin pack into several different 5-10 packs.
Like I said before, even if they give us a custom editor, the feature would still likely be pay-for. Even if we're the ones creating skins, they'll still have to compensate the developers that built the infrastructure for us to edit skins. and they'll still need to have staff to make sure nothing obscene or copyrighted makes it through, and so there will still be jobs needing paid for.

Because Mojang doesn't host user created content, the users do. Companies won't go after individual people violating copyright beause they're not going to get anything out of a small 'target' like an individual player and will end up costing the copyright holder more money to go through the legal process than they'd get in compensation from the defendant. But 4J is a big company with resources and could be held liable, because if there was to be user-created skin that violated a copyright, 4J would be hosting it. It's what happened to Megaupload, the site wasn't pushing copyrighted content, but its users were, and Megaupload was responsible for hosting it and got shut down. That's why they'd need dedicated staff to ensure no copyright violations come through in custom skin which is why a custom editor would still wind-up being pay-for DLC
Keep in mind this is something we do not have to have if you want it you can work for it if you dont then ok why dont we all just get on with live i mean its out of our control we all can sit here and whine or we can make something worth looking atthis sure as hell isnt worth looking at
Ultimately: if you don't agree with paying for extra skins, don't buy them and STFU. Nobody is forcing you to buy them. The packs will have a trail mode anyway with access to some of the skins - for free! So I really don't get the bitching. Don't want it? Don't buy it. Pretty bloody simple.
That guy saying it would be simple to port Minecraft to the Xbox has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, evidenced simply by the statement "converting to whatever scripting language the Xbox uses". Um, yeah, that's how it works... as in, not at all.
The 40 million in revenue that 4J apparently earned: some of that kicks back to Microsoft, and I'd be very surprised if some of it didn't kick back to Mojang too. And it's not all profit. They been working on porting the game for the last 12 months, you think that all happened for free? If anything, the windfall will allow 4J to support the game for longer (you want that, right?) and might get stretch goals like dedicated servers, at least for a while. Just because they made a lot of revenue doesn't mean they're entitled to do anything for free.
The argument that passion for the game would be driving them and so supposedly they should work for free: that's ludicrous. Nobody works for the passion alone, and the bills still need to get paid!

^^ Pretty sure you wouldn't be uploading your custom skins to 4J's imaginary servers your talkin about for others to download..?
I would think if anything one gamertag would make his/her own skin for personal use only.
BTW: Nintendo has said before they don't mind user created tributes to their games... Ever played a flash game that was a Super Mario parody of some sort??
I have no problem paying alittle extra. Its a company that deserves it for a change, unlike many others that sell millions and dont.
And skins/texture packs etc is also not something a MC player absolutely needs (you got the full game ++ and free updates), so iam thankfull for that they only take a small $ for these things (if they do, havent read about this) and everything else is free.
ITs a strategy other companys could learn from also. The whole "push out a game fast and release pricy DLC that everyone needs in the game right after, that shouldve been there from the start tactic" is stupid and irritating.
An example is COD, that couldve released the full game with more maps from the beginning and make all MAPs and modes etc, that are released in the future and is a big deal in the game, free. And be more creative, sell emblems, banners and such things instead. They would still earn alot and get alot more happy faces.
