Quick question, if I made a world before the update, will slime still spawn afterwards? I would think that they still would, but I am in the process of making a slime farm and don't want to waste effort.
Need some advice. I am on my second slime finding expedition. The chunks close to my base are at best 2 together. So I had to go with that - the ones that had 3 adjoining slime chunks are all too far away. That said my first attempt was a disaster thanks to lava, lava and more lava. All around my chunk area there was lava - when I try and clear a single block I usually end up swimming in lava. Having died countless death, I gave those chunks up and chose another pair.
This time I did clear out one chunk fully at bed rock and 4 high - there was still lava when I broke into the top but I managed to get it done. While digging the adjoining chunk lava was flowing out of every block I mined. That left me really frustrated and I want some expert advice on how to handle this lava thingie. One more thing - I realised that the area I was in was a place I had been to earlier - an abandoned mine shaft - so there is a lof of dark areas and also the lava that flows out into my slime chunk area is all beneath a layer of obsidian (which I had done earlier). So I was not able to tame it with water also.
Any advice would be welcome as I am yet to see a single slime after having spent a considerable amount of time.
Best thing for filling in lava is to get above the pool of it and drop sand/gravel in it, because of gravity they fall to the lowest point they can filling it in. Its a good way to fill the lava pools up and also easy to mine it back out afterwards. You stumbling onto a mineshaft (not to be taken literally cause we dont have mineshafts in this current version) you said had dark areas. You will most definitely want light up those areas so no other mobs can spawn there (and surrounding caves etc) this will give slimes a better chance to spawn having eliminated other mobs from spawning.
Thanks FayedNZ.
I will get down to lighting the area soon.
For the lava - I understand the gravel concept but like I said it is coming from under a layer of obsidian. So I am assuming you would want me to mine out all the obsidian and then drop gravel right? Just out of curiousity does the gravel obsolete the lava so that when I mine that column I would not see lava anymore?
Also - off topic - what do you mean mineshafts are not in this version (I suppose you are referring to 1.3)? Are they called something else?
Placing a gravel/sand block occupied by lava will take out the lava and replace it, much like any block so yes the lava will not be in that block anymore, however if you mine it lava might flow onto it. But thats different. And no I was talking about our version on the xbox being equivalent to 1.7.3 we dont have abandoned mineshafts. But upon reading you post again are you just reffering to abandon mineshaft as in your own mine you had abandoned? If so then I misunderstood and thought you were actually talking about real abandoned mineshafts which we get in the next version update.
(You can also try tackling it from the bottom start at the layer under obsidian just be fast and place dirt there or any other block for the time being)
Thanks for being patient with me.
The problem is that the lava is actually in the slime chunk area - so I need to get RID of it - I have managed to dig out 26x16 - I need that 6 more to make it 32x16 and it is there that lava is prevalent. I will do the gravel thing and see how it goes. Tackling it from below does not help me clear the area.
I am on the PC version and I am referring to the actual abandoned mine shaft and not a mine I abandoned. I did not realize that this was a xBox discussion. Anyway I am sure it is all relevant.
BTW - I never did thank you guys for this excellent help that this thread is - so thanks a ton

Oh lol, well what version on PC are you playing cause if its recent (and a few version before recent) slimes will spawn on layers up to 40 and below, not 16 and below like us on our version on xbox. so you could be saving time lava filling. Also tackling from below would still be tackling the lava once its all filled in you just mine out what youve filled in.
FayedNZ - I finally cleared out a 17 x 34 x 4 area. Phew, it took some time but I am now done. I also went into peaceful and lit up a lot of the areas around. I went back to my base for 10 minutes and I come back to find nothing. One medium slime that gave me no slime balls at the end (I used my fist). I tried again and this time nothing spawned. Sad. Very sad.
The only thing I can think of are the torched I have spammed. I am trying to replace with glow stone but I dont have enough. So what else can it be?
I am on the very latest - 1.3. I guess bedrock should still be ok right? Or should I go up now. God that would be most tiresome

Glowstone wont work on the floor in your current version im afraid, it was changed back to glass properties therefore mobs wont spawn on it. Having it closer to the top (in the upper layers near 40) is just convenient cause you dont have to travel so far down, and it makes it easier to get them upto the surface for a xp farm which I think you should turn it into seen as you are on 1.3. There may be more caves nearby which would need lighting up dont forget mobs can spawn upto 128 blocks away (spherical radius from you) so you could be waiting 24 blocks away from your chunk but mobs could be spawning in a cave 100 blocks away in the other direction.
note: you should take advantage of the fact that slimes on your version can spawn from bedrock all the way upto layer 40,if you made 3 high floors you could have 11 slime pads going from layer 5 upto layer 40 thats alot. But abit overkill haha
EDIT: Forgot to mention you can use jack-o-lanterns as a substitute for glowstone on the ground, mobs spawn on those.
Awesome. I knew something was amiss with glowstone. But one good news - after 2 night time sitting 28 or 29 blocks away one big guy bloomed and I got 6 slime balls. Not bad.
I will get rid of the glow stone - do you think I should build one more floor above my current pad? I guess I have to use the gravel trick then to find out if there are any dark spots around - I did light up a lot - spent 128 torches on it, so I thought I was good. Also mine is a 16 x 32 pad only - not a triple slime chunk.
One thing though - when you say you need to be out side 24 blocks but within 32 from which coordinate of the slime chunk should you measure - center or the edge? Say you are 24 away from the center - then that it makes is 40 away from the edge - so I just wanted to ensure that I am waiting it out at the right spot.
Thanks again
Its not a concrete rule mobs will still spawn but if you had 2 chunks like yours optimum waiting area would be going from the middle where those chunks meet and going up 24-32 blocks, but as I said its not really a MUST do or HAVE to kinda thing. If you're getting enough slime balls there isnt really a need for extra floors unless you want to increase more slime spawns or if you're going to turn it into an xp farm.

So, how can i tell what version i am running? Im current, just got a patch last ngight or this morning, but id like to know how to check. From the OP i was under the impression that glowstone properties were changed to resemple an opaque block, thus the ability to spawn slimes. However, this area is still a bit unclear to me. i cannot find anything regarding the change, and the wiki seems to say no slimes will NOT spawn on Glowstone. A quick search shows there is still misinformation being spread as everyone has a different answer. I used the spawner locater to dig out 3 spawning locations back to back, and continued enlarging it. I have torches on the exterior walls, but my main source of light is glowstone. For me i am currently seeing enough spawns. ive seen 3 large spawn in the past hour yielding 23 slimeballs. I dont even use sticky pistons so it works for me. i didnt build any kind of traps or anything, tho i may, bjt so far so good. I habent seen any spawn directly, so not sure if any spawned on top of the glowstone, and while i was pretty liberal dispensing them, there are still plenty of non-glowstone blocks as well. I mainly ask because i tend to like lighter areas and was thinking of adding more glowstone, as well as building more spots in the future. So, on the current version are glowstones considered opaque or transparent? Id love to get an answer from op as he seems to know what he is talking about, but am open to any responses that can be backed up. Please dont just spout off something because your friend who played alpha on computer might habe mentioned something about glowstone 2 years ago. If you dont know, dont fewl obligated to open your mouth. Also, im assuming ore blocks such as redstone and coal are considered opaque, but cant find anything solid on that eithrr. I habe lots of ore remaining in the floor and would hate to see that reduce my number of spawns. Thanks to everyone who has been helpful in this thread, with a special thanks to op for putting together the info and keeping everyone up to date. I knew nothing about slimes this morning and from reading and following your directions, tonight i habe a large, functioning slime room and plenty of slimeballs to introduce me to sticky pistons.
Since we are 1.7.3, got to assume it's considered a stone.
What he said. If you don't want to risk having to replace all the glowstone on your Xbox world after an update, you may want to consider alternatives now.
We are running in the equivalent of PC's 1.7.3 the guy above I was helping didnt realize this was the xbox forum for MC as he has the pc version, it is the only reason why I said the things I said about glowstone and different layers. All the stuff I said in my OP applies to xbox, glowstone is a spawnable block for us until official 1.0 release which is quite a few months away for us. They do spawn on ore blocks to answer that question
*You wouldnt want to change anything as of yet until the adventure update where we can grow pumpkins therefore making it easier to make jack-o-lanterns seen as not everyone has a good supply of pumpkins in their worlds right now
Cool, thanks for the info everyone. I thought what i thought was correct ;p. Wanted to be sure tho. Good point about upcoming changes, never thought of having to switch out all my glowstone. But ill burn that bridge when we get to it. By that point ill be ready to start a new world, have more slime farms, or have enough slimeballs to last for awhile. Pumpkins are a problem for me right now. Ill jst stick what is working. Since my last post ive gathered several more. Its interesting how rare slimes are,yet o easy to farm when you habe the right info. As to the poster above, glowstone on the ceiling is fine. Assuming you are making a room 3 high or greater. For slimes to spawn they need to be resting on an opaque block, then have 3 transparent blocks on top of that. That is for a large slime which needs like 2.4 blocks high to spawn, not actually 3. Air is also considered a transparent block if the above sentence had you wondering
*Edit* Appologies for the typos. Im using a laggy tabet with a messed up keyboard. Pretty sure it is comprehendable however.

Retired StaffTry Jack-o-lanterns, you can place them on floors
Beta 1.6.6 Changed material type from glass to stone
Official release 1.0.0 Changed material back to glass
