your 15 wolves are the problem to your animals disappearing. in one of my worlds i have 21 dogs and all the animals vanished also due to the passive mob cap. I'd say kill 14 of your dogs and if monsters are spawning at night, light up the ground and the caves too, it will drastically increase slime spawning. you might want to make a waiting room just about 25 blocks away from the slime room.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, I figured that. Time to go on a hunting spree to kill off my wolves lol
So I followed the guide, and found a section of 7 spawn chunks all connected. Slimes were spawning as I was digging, granting me 27 slime balls before I finished the 3rd cavern. Thanks for all the info!
Also, I plan on trying to make it more efficient, and I haven't seen this info in the discussion so far. Is it better to do a multi-tier system with one block as the floor between levels (to get 3 levels per chunk), or a really tall spawn area covering floors 0-16? (To clarify, if a slime was going to spawn in my chunk at level 12, would it spawn and drop to 0 or not spawn at all?)

if it had floors say on level 12 (12 being the floor) it would spawn there and hop in a random direction. It wouldnt fall through the floor. I havent really tested different height floors. Ive always used 3 high. You can test it out and let the thread know how it goes
Wow 7 chunks I get more than enough with just one chunk (about 20 balls each time I go past collection point) haha couldnt imagine 7

Ok, I think I'll continue to build several separate rooms, and keep an eye on them for a bit to see what the average spawn rate is. Once I have that I can easily knock out the floors in between and then test it that way as well
Well here is some proof that this tutorial works really well. I spent about an hour mining out the area and not long after exploring a nearby cave, I return to find some welcomed guests

I found my first slime near my slime farm the other day ^^
However it was only 1 and it was a small bugger and it was actually in a little mine near my slime farm. So I'm busy expanding the area I found the little basterd in, hoping to find more bigger ones soon.
Quick question, if I made a world before the update, will slime still spawn afterwards? I would think that they still would, but I am in the process of making a slime farm and don't want to waste effort.

coords for map center are X: -64 Z: -176. I checked for chunks, and found one at X: -48 Z: -192
Am I correct in that if I dug up to Z: -191, and cleared around that area, that it would spawn Slimes?

This is the border of the chunk you would dig out that and everything in between in. Make sure to be layer 16 and below (y coords)
Thanks for the reply. I was at 22. So I'll make sure that I'm at 16, or below.
