What I'm saying though, is that the slime could have never spawned in the area I found it in, because I was never within a distance it could spawn in while I used my mob grinder on normal. Mobs don't try to spawn outside of 128 blocks or so of you, and my trap is over 500 blocks away. I built the trap, got away from it so mobs would spawn in it (I got away from it by moving in a direction even further from the mine I found the slime in, I built my trap near the corner of the world, and my observation platform AT the edge of where you can build, one block in from the edge. So at no point could my upping the difficulty have affected the slime spawning. And like I said, I only kept the difficulty up long enough to run the grinder, then turned it back to peaceful to make the voyage back.
And I needed a grinder for gunpowder for TNT, naturally. And bone meal for dyes and quickly farming trees.
You change to difficulty from peaceful, stuff spawns, you can not say that is a controlled experiment. Regardless, I have.
Question: Does slime spawn in peaceful?
Test method: Start a new known map on peaceful only. Using slime finder dig down to layer 12 at a point where three slime chunks converge. Dig 32x32 around this point 4 high. Slab any existing caves around. Wait. Ponder. Know.
Answer: NO
Time taken: 1hr 30mins, collected 4 diamonds, half stack of iron, 12 gold, roughly 28 stacks of cobble, 1stack and 8 pc. of redstone, 11 lapis.
(seriously considering starting a slime farm drilling company due to how little time it took) There are a lot of resources exposed and un-mined.
Played with some who joined me while this went on for an hour after, still no slime... Never will be.
History: Map seed identical to previous map where I have 2 massive slime farms(one in this same spot). While digging both those farms, I constantly ran into slime. (due to the farm size, it is 64x64 and I play normal) One farm produces 1x1 slimes so well, eventually it causes a frame drop. No exact numbers but clearing it out gives me a stack and a half of slimeballs.
1. 100% Slimes DO NOT spawn in peaceful.
2. Slimes do however, do not despawn. So having played or just played regular, upon loading up peaceful, you can find slime, but new slime does not spawn. (find a slime save, exit, load peaceful, the same slime is there)
3. There's a wiki, while predominately for pc, it says the same thing, (reports is not confirming either)
4. Unless your willing to spend the time to "confirm", and do it right, stop confirming.
I know I sound harsh, but I'm trying not to be... Just know that "finding slime" is not the same as "spawning" Slime.
The very last thing anyone wants is people hunting for slime in peaceful and not finding any.

No worries, no harshness taken, I like getting the correct answer and you did it scientifically.
which just leaves me wondering how it happened, I guess I probably made a trip on normal without realising it and gave the slime an opportunity to spawn.

Relieved to hear it. Reading my own post I sound like prig.
The whole spawning/growth thing is odd. I'm always away from my slime harvester and even further from the farm, yet slime keep coming. I've also been what seems far away enough from wheat and mushrooms yet both seem to grow. The only thing I can think of that would account for this is the travel distance (radius) before physically seeing.
The 130 or so blocks could mean distance to chunk rather then blocks themselves. So spawning/growth might occur in the entire chunk rather then just a block radius.
A different subject, and I'm getting a headache from pretend thinking. (the above does not correlate with what I've wiki read)

I agree with you on that, sometimes I feel like the game measures distance for spawning and growth by chunk the way you describe. Because my mob grinder -- it's a gravity trap and it's 26 blocks above the landing, but monsters never seem to spawn in it until I move 24 blocks away from it, even though it oughta spawn because I'm 24 blocks below it.
I have a huge slime farm it's probably 150x90. It's 3 blocks high and my torches are in the 4th layer/roof. I had them all on the floor but the slimes were invincible whenever they were near the torches. Slimes spawn in there but not as many as there should be. Maybe 2 every hour. I want them to fill up the place when they spawn like some Youtube videos show. How can I get more to spawn?

I second this conclusion because I did the same. My base was 64 blocks above the slime spawn I built, but climbing the ladder never spawed any. It wasn't until I tried an experiment based on something I had read and dug a HORIZONTAL tunnel that went 24+ blocks away that the slimes finally spawned.
Without further trials it could have just been coincidence... but I second the notion that the distance computation may not be working properly in the game (or else our understanding of how it does work is flawed).

One technique has been described - clear the slime chunk of ALL other mobs. Basically, what this means is lighting up EVERY cavern in the chunk from bedrock to ground level, so other mobs can't spawn. That would only leave slimes to spawn in your slime farm.
Better yet, dig out the entire chunk from bedrock to sky. Same thing really, if slightly more pickaxeing (or TNT'ing).

Maybe you dont have many because only a fraction of your dug out area is an actual slime chunk? Do you know where the slime chunks are or have you just randomly dug and hoped for the best?
Good tip. Yep lighting up the surrounding caves significantly increases your slime spawning chances, because it reduces the my type.
Edit: Remember Slime is supposed to be rare. Lol
The other thing I've been trying to stress is picking a slime spawning spot where more then one slime chunk converges. This dramatically increases slime potential. Two is good, three amazing, four, well I haven't looked for one but I can imagine(and rare). I have two slime spawners, way over sized to catch the chunks and more, and they always have slime.
If your going to use a mobavator, or using a low ceiling(three blocks)make sure to slab, flood or fill in the caves above you in the chunk bedrock to -40 in that chunk. Slabs work well and is the easiest.
The whole chunk spawning thing is interesting because it conflicts with the wiki, but one must still consider the source and the pc predominance. I'm trying to think of a way to test this chunk vs blocks theory. (with as little work possible)
If I build a two floor mob spawner at max height, in the center of a chunk, and just within the chunk and I make some levels below to peg block distance I should be able to see if its the chunk or the distance. I think I'll see nothing spawn while I'm in that chunk below. Next would be to figure out distance vertically, chunk by chunk center using a pressure plate and redstone as an alarm.
It's a bit of work for a trivial thing... next time I make a spawner for a trap I'll check it out, but no time soon

Wait so when you say layer 12, does that mean Y:12?
I'm new to Slime spawning.

Yep - has to be below 40.
All this talk you guys are going on about makes me want to go use a known seed, slime finder and clear to bedrock to find out exactly what's going on. Slimes should spawn on peaceful and, if not, then someone needs to go put that in the bug thread if it isn't already there.

Alright I'll try going below 40 then, thanks for the help.
LOL, i was bored and killing time waiting for the update yknow.
I thought it would be good for people to see this before they release pistons so they would be already prepared. You can add a little mix and put a tut in the first page so everyone sees.
And I needed a grinder for gunpowder for TNT, naturally. And bone meal for dyes and quickly farming trees.

Caves unlit? how many slime chunks do you have?
