How many items can be on the ground at once

I am making a mob a trap and am trying to figure out how many items can be on the ground at once before de-spawning. Does anybody know?

They despawn after being on the ground for 5 minutes. Im not sure if there's an amount cap

Agreed, despawn after 5 mins. I believe there is no amount cap, it will probably lag your game if there are too many on the ground at once though.

I had well over 2,000 items on the ground at once when a "Friend" put tnt in my storage area..........

There is no limit, they will despawn after five minutes like the earlier post said. Lag might stop you though.
