I wonder if all the additions I listed in the OP aren't coming? Maybe that's why we can't get clarification from the dev's? I think it was a safe assumption to say those thing are coming since they are things included in the 1.8.2 and 1.2.3 updates though.
From all the time I've been playing on the PC, the Xbox worlds are more than enough to hold all the additions. theo nly downside would be things that are already super rare, like Mushroom Biomes and NPS Villages. Thankfully, when we get to those updates, there are seeds waiting for us to use to find those things easily.
There are minecraft clones on xbl which have HUUUUUUUUGE worlds, if a clone can do it then surely the official Mojang and Microsoft supported developers can.
Yes, but here's the difference. Those clones are indie games, therefore microsoft doesn't have nearly as much to do with them and their save size is unlimited
aye but only the seeds that have all these things contained within -432 < x <432, -432 < z < 432. will be of any use to us which is a shame if you have a few favourite seeds from pc which you have to travel slightly further to reach.
i've already had to discard several xbox seeds I really liked due to having no cactus in range and this will only get worse in 1.8 unless they make some world changes.
Except there are many more seeds discovered for 1.8. I've seen seeds that spawn you in jungles, ravines, mineshafts, NPC Villages, etc, etc. The seeds will be fine.
Once 1.8 get's here, I'll be happy because then I can play survival Island.
I suppose world will expand...
I don't know why they say the Xbox cannot handle it. Of course it can! It's a GAMING console. A computer is a COMPUTER. It wasn't designed for gaming like an Xbox was. So, I agree. It should expand. Even if it isn't infinite...
You do know that a console and computer are practically the same thing right? The only real difference between them is that the console is pretty much a dumbed down computer. This makes it affordable to customers so that they're able to mass market them. PCs can do everything consoles can and then some which is why Minecraft runs much better on them.
The reason the Xbox can't handle it is because Minecraft is not your conventional game that's made up of polygons. Instead it's a voxel game that renders in chunks which puts a lot more stress on the hardware then games like CoD...
Even after taking this into consideration I believe they can expand the world but they were just being cautious before releasing the game because they didn't want it to be unplayable. I doubt we'll ever see infinite worlds due to it's 8 player + splitscreen support but we'll see....
An idea I have is to have different world size options... That would help a lot, who agrees? People with not that much memory, they can have tiny worlds, and those people with lots of memory, can have their own LARGE world. Yay. Everyone is happy.

It doesn't really matter how much memory you have because every Xbox runs Minecraft the ssme..almost. There's not a big difference between them and you have to take into account the fact that Arcade games are limited in size. Therefore increasing the world size would mean they would have less room for other features. Personally I feel like having the option to make it smaller would be nice though. I'm not really a fan of being forced to play on a 870 x 870 plot of land and would love to have the option to change those dimensions.
I like that idea because an Xbox can have different amounts of memory depending on what kind it is and if they increased the size overall somebody with not much space on the hard drive might not be able to create a world but if they had the option to make the map smaller(like in total miner) they could still play but just with not as big of a world. And then also people with quite a bit of memory could have bigger worlds to play on too.
I have a feeling the the limitations on the world size is not because the XBox Can't handle it is because everytime there is a major update PC players could walk in another direction and have the new features. With each new major update the world size on the 360 would get bigger allowing for keeping the old worlds, while adding the new features without having to restart after hours of progress.

You can't change the size (as in volume) of the world in Total Miner. Every time you increase or decrease the surface area of the map, the world becomes deeper or more shallow, respectively, so it all evens out. Either way I think this is a good idea aswell, that way people can have more room for their new biomes and villages and whatnot, and others can have their deep, massive cave systems.
Sorry, slightly off topic, but what concerns me is the notion of having to start over because my current world won't be able to handle the new features or simply won't have them on it because it's an early world. Nothing I hate more than doing the same work twice, and I'll feel like a bigger idiot for gathering resources for new content when I won't be able to use it at all. Best solution for me would be if it's possible to zone into another biome and back once the new content is delivered.
Is there anyone on this forum that knows enough to say whether it's possible/likely that this will happen?
Blame the fact of the 4 person splitscreen. Wonder what it would be like for all 4 people to wonder off in different directions on the same console?
i would be satisfied to have a world option to make it larger, but limits how many people can splitscreen on said world. Though i dont splitscreen eitherway.
Again (for around the 4th time), this thread was always about wondering how the current world size would do up against all the new terrain features that should be potentially coming with the next two major updates (1.8.3 & 1.2.3) which will be coming after 1.7.3.
This thread was not meant to be a debate or argument about the technical details of how, why, if the XBOX could ever handle larger worlds or infinite worlds.
I believe that 4J can and will figure out a way to bring us as much as possible. If that means the current world size may need adjusting to account for the new terrain enhancements coming in future updates I'm sure they will do their best to figure out the best way to do it. I have faith in them. Up until this point they have not disappointed and have been more than helpful on both the forums and twitter.
The only reason I started this thread was because I was hoping they would give their opinion on what they might do to the world to compensate for the big terrain changes that are potentially coming.

He's talking harddrive space for a bigger save file, not RAM to run the game.
However RAM acts as a "fast acting harddrive" if you will. This is used to store information that is happening real time.
Accessing the harddrive takes more time (save the game and that's how long it takes just to update once), thus the need for RAM in computers/consoles.
A typical computer nowadays bring 2-4 GB of RAM. And that's not top end computers. An Xbox (being 7 years old) is at 512 MB if RAM.
That's 2000 - 4000 MB vs 512 MB of a console. That is what many concern to be the issue when discussing infinite worlds and IF the Xbox can handle it.
So the Harddrive would STORE the map, but to PLAY the map would use the RAM.

I think it could handle a little more than they are letting on.
