When strip mining, to help keep from getting bored, I just put on music and hope I don't get arthritis in my thumbs. Despite my attempts to make it fun, I just end up getting bored with it. How do YOU break up the monotony?
I turn the music off of the game crank up some pandora and start to mine. I usually will mine for a while then build some things then go back to mining
When i strip mine it is usually with my friends online so we can talk.
But when i am by myself i usually do one or two tunnels then take a break to build something or go on a monster killing spree.
I've noticed that lots of breaks help too. I'll go creeper hunting or something. Mostly, I've been sticking with music though. I'd go with youtube videos, but I feel like i'd be falling in lava a lot :-) I do that enough as it is... complete lack of attention on my part...
I do not get tired of strip mining! I also use a rubberband on my controller as my "helper" -as my fingers are prone to getting stiff w/ repetitive motions.
I find after wrangling a 28 month old, 45 minutes of exploring or mining is just the thing to relax my nerves. The MC music bordered on zen relaxation music, and I usually keep it soft. My husband sits next to me someties and reads to the MC music. It is also condusive to talking .
I have yet to build anything bigger than a sq stone slab w a few windows to hold my chests and bed. I don't really know what prevents me from building. Maybe I'm waiting for the updates. I wish there was more of an RPG aspect to the game. But I play alone and there are no NPC's yet, so the mining holds my interest. I can't describe how it feels to crack into a wall innocently looking for coal or iron and exposing a huge black cavern! The possibilities are endless as to what lies within.
My goal is to build a desert city. But I've yet to find a map that makes the cut. And I'm still learning about the game.
Sadly for me something like music wouldn't distract me from it. Usually I just put up with the boredom, because once it's all over I'll have all sorts of goodies to go mess with.
I have yet to have the need to strip mine. I came across a huge cavern right at my spawn point. I just light, mine, and explore at the moment. It got me straight to diamonds.

The enderdragon never did anything to me so why go after it?
I definitely need something to distract me. Then again, maybe I just made too big of a strip mine. I literally went from one end of the map to the other...so its a lot of: (Chop top block, chop bottom block, move forward, repeat X 6, place torch...repeat).
