What is happening here is what is suppose to happen.
You go through the portal and then when the link to the old portal it creates a new one within the same chunk.

I leave from time to time, but it's so safe and warm here that I always come back. Like a bonfire in the dead of winter. (You hurt my internet feelings )
I didn't even watch the video. I just posted because i figured someone would know if it's a glitch or game mechanic. Guess I was wrong.

If there is no active portal within range it will make a new one.
To the OP - a more efficient way is to put the portal out with water. Pretty sure that works in 1.6.6. If it doesn't, just put dirt in the frame.
No diamond pickaxe required and no bashing through obsidian.

Gawd, I would hate to have to hack up all that obsidian with a diamond pick. Much easier to just carry some lava in a bucket and "cast" all the obsidian I'll ever need.
