To identify people who are selling goods, why not put a hat on each merchant, depending on what they're selling. A gold hat can be food. A leather cap can be equipment. A Diamond block can be blocks and precious resources. Maybe I can even tax people who use the hats accordingly. How does this idea sound, or is all old news?
On a totally different level, does the PC minecraft have house alarms? If not, we can really do with one to stop those thieves and griefers. Maybe you can leave a few dogs in a a house, and anyone who steps on the alarm trigger unleashes the dogs?
For the first half of your post, I'm going to admit, I had no clue what the hell you are talking about.
For the second half though, I've found a way to make an alarm system. Pressure plates and note blocks. Someone steps on it, it activates the note block.
Umm WTF????? Testificits don't travel very far and are not in the XBOX version yet. A hat Tax?????? Don't tell your local PD about that one.... I predict a miss post
I think there may have been a miscommunication or lack of detail in the first post. What I mean is that if one was to incorporate an economy with trading, there would have to be shops set up to sell the goods. One thing for sure is that you cant just leave things in boxes for "display", as it would be open for people to steal it. Instead, people looking to make money would go about their usual business building...but would wear a cap. The color would determine what they're selling. As for "taxes", it can be something as simple as giving a set amount of currency per game session. For instance, it would cost you 10 iron ingots to walk around selling goods on the spot. This is just an example. To be honest, the tax idea sorta tagged along.
As for the alarm, I would like something that tells the dogs inside the house to attack whoever triggered the alarm. This was just an idea that came along. Had a nasty grieving incident today : (
1) We don't have servers.
2) We can only have 8 players.
I just don't see the need for a currency system, or jobs, or merchants, or anything like that.
You can only run 8 players at a time, sure, but I have friends that join at different times of the day. One person leaves, another joins. Personally, though, I believe 8 people at once would provide for an active town regardless.
...and lastly, what do you mean "people taking it too far"? How I play makes no difference to how you would play. One can play this game however he/she pleases, no? As long as I get my enjoyment from the game, its all the same.
Are you into RP ingame? If your not, and you simply ask a player to hand over items as currency so he/she can sell items on your server, which can only have a max 8 players anyway, wouldnt he/she just tell you to... to put it bluntly, naff off?
If its for RP reasons, then crack on mate, whatever floats ya boat.
Dogs cant attack on demand, only when your attacked.
I guess that would be the case. Yes, it would be a RP game. It obviously wouldn't be played casually, as people walking around with a bunch of stuff wouldn't have any need to give it away for a bunch of the same object. As long as the people joining the game can respect the fact that said traded object can have a value, they would have the opportunity to trade it for something they require but don't want to create or venture out to find.
P.S to better serve the guests of my map, I would happily volunteer as the "traveling salesman".
Again, I wouldnt welcome the average miner joe into the game...it would be with people that acknowledge the currency system. I believe there can be a diversity in play style if you had the choice to either venture out for your own tools or trade it for something of equal value. What if i don't like to mine, but i like to...say...fish. I can sell the fish in to earn currency to pay for the resources gathered from mining. I did what I enjoyed, and earned equal benefits for doing so.
It's a crude idea, I'll admit. That's why I don't expect everyone to agree with me. It's an RP game with the need for personal restraints. But for those who may agree, what would you think?

Could not agree more. The whole currency thing just makes no sense. I actually leave useful stuff at the original spawn.... for free. That way when a friend(friends help friends, not ask for money and taxes) they have shelter if its night when they enter, and tools to just start playing.

Seatbelts are not as confining as Wheelchairs. Buckle up.

Once in a while, playing the game to only build and survive can get a little old. I like rules and restraints to how I play so I can enjoy the game in a new experience. I find it a little refreshing to have a map that's dedicated to running a trading system. A friend doesn't have to join if they wouldnt want to be restrained to what they can do. Those involved would respect the RP element, or just wait to join whenever im playing a "free build" map.
