1. This game does not freeze while you press Start and go to the game menu. Keep that in mind.
2. Play the game on peaceful until you get a decent base built. Then bump it up to a monster level.
3. Similarly, when the monsters are kicking your butt, try playing on Peaceful for a bit for a break.
4. Remember that when you die in lava, you are very likely to lose most, if not all, your items.
5. There's really no reason not to shear sheep in your path (especially now while you can do it without shears) -- its a valuable resource and it stacks.
6. Always keep track of your picks and torches. Getting stuck on level 5 in the dark, having to tunnel out with your bare hands is really no fun.
7. If you are playing Peaceful, you have no way to get gunpowder, bone meal or string.
8. Wheat is a great way to stock yourself with food for a dungeon crawl. 64 only takes up one space, you can and you can make bread on the fly (you dont need a crafting table). Pork chops heal well but they dont stack.
9. Spiders can see you through walls. Keep that in mind if you hear that screeching and you are leaving a building... chances are good one is waiting over the door to bushwhack you.
10. All the goodies (gold, diamonds, redstone, lapis, etc) are on the bottom levels. If you are looking for these special items, just delve all the way down till you hit bedrock. Just remember to leave yourself a ladder, or a plan to get back out.
11. Copiously light the caverns as you mine. Instead of posting the torches on the wall (which you may mine later) leave them on the floor.
12. Until they fix it in a patch (likely soon), make yourself a trough with three spaces. On the outside edges empty one bucket of water a piece. Now as long as you only draw from that center space, you have unlimited water.
13. The Netherworld is a neat feature but in my opinion not terribly useful... with one shining (pardon the pun) exception. The glowstones are very useful for lighting up your house without looking tacky with torches. But consider going in there in Peaceful mode.... mining those Glowstone stalagtites is no fun when the ghasts are bombarding you.
14. Remember the elevation of this game is very limited. If you insist on a castle on the mountain, the castle itself is not going to be very tall. (yes I recycled this one from an earlier post lol)
15. Multiplayer can be rewarding. But think twice about opening your meticulously-built kingdom to strangers. It is amazing how very quickly someone can destroy hours of work in this... there is absolutely nothing stopping other players from destroying anything of yours.
16. When dawn breaks in the morning, your first order of business (on non Peaceful Modes) is to search the nearby environment after the monsters burn up. You get a LOT of free bones and feathers this way.
17. Remember! When a Creeper destroys a chest by exploding next to it, some of the items WILL be lost. All the more reason to keep you home lit well at all times.
18. Monsters can climb ladders. Spiders can climb walls. Be prepared for this.
19. When wandering around and hunting, carry a bed with you at all times. That way, if the sun goes down and you can make it home, simply burrow down 4, clear out a 6x6 area, pop up a torches, plug the hole, and set the bed. Home sweet home in seconds.
20. This game really FEELS like an MMORPG, but it isn't. So remember, if something really crappy just happened.... reload a saved game.
1. This game does not freeze while you press Start and go to the game menu. Keep that in mind.
If you are offline, it does. If you are online, it doesn't.
8. Wheat is a great way to stock yourself with food for a dungeon crawl. 64 only takes up one space, you can and you can make bread on the fly (you dont need a crafting table). Pork chops heal well but they dont stack.
You do need a crafting table for bread.
11. Copiously light the caverns as you mine. Instead of posting the torches on the wall (which you may mine later) leave them on the floor.
Actually, putting torches all on one side of a cave makes navigation easier. Putting torches on the floor is a way to get lost.
12. Until they fix it in a patch (likely soon), make yourself a trough with three spaces. On the outside edges empty one bucket of water a piece. Now as long as you only draw from that center space, you have unlimited water.
Infinite Water sources will not be fixed. They are a feature of the game and still exist in the PC version.
Wheat can totally be stacked to 64. You must be thinking of bread. But you're right about needing the crafting table to make it. Another good alternative is mushroom stew. Just requires two extra slots but heals much better than bread.
2 corrections. It is possible to find gunpowder and string on peaceful, they can be found in dungeon chests, and its better to make an infinite water source 2x2 instead of 1x3. if you place the water sources on opposite corners, you can take water from any spot and it will always refill.
turning off auto save before going into the nether would be one. I'd never start a guide with that start nonsense. You might as well mention the leaderboards as well.
Yep crafting table for dinner time(wheat). Personally I prefer mushrooms
Nice try but for a newbie guide which there is plenty of already, i think your missing some primo info.
1. build simple shelter first. Making a bed is prime.
2. Start on easy so you learn how to handle monsters.
3. Make a furnace. Pigs are a quicker start health resource. Burn wood till you find coal, or use wood to make charcoal.
4. make some torches for you shelter
5. have two exits for you shelter. You never know when a creepers at your door.
I'd rather see some xbox specifics, there's a million guides out there.
1. Turn off auto save before entering the nether.
2. Build a chicken farm central to your wheat and mushroom farms. Chickens tend to disappear once you travel away 30 blocks.(for auto people, not a newbie tip but xbox specific)
I'm sure others can keep this rolling... Again xbox specific.

Seatbelts are not as confining as Wheelchairs. Buckle up.
Also a revision to 19: I find you only need to dig a 1x2 hole 4 down and place your bed to be safe and obviously plug the hole you made. It could be because I always slept as soon as I can, however.
its better to make an infinite water source 2x2 instead of 1x3. if you place the water sources on opposite corners, you can take water from any spot and it will always refill.
Can Lava be done the same way? I am having trouble with that
I like these tips. I'll admit that a few had even helped me, and Ive been playing for quite some time. I like the stackable wheat idea, it would certainly help condense space that's usually fivefold with food. I'd also consider stacking mushrooms and wood for mushroom stew. It only requires 3 blocks of space (red mushroom, brown mushroom, bowl/ wood) and one stew restores 5 hearts.
Here are a couple more...
-The new update has made placed sugar cane non-solid, but it still takes up the space in the world. You can use sugar cane as an air pocket when building underwater. Also, doors separate water from entering buildings. It looks rather goofy, but helpful nonetheless
-On that same note, avoid holes when building underwater. The current will push/pull anything in or around that hole. Anybody who has started to drown would know that you're pushed down every time you take damage. The hole's current and your water damage doesn't coincide very well and you can easily become trapped and die struggling to reach the surface.
-Make sure to make your farm entirely enclosed at least 1.5 blocks high, with a door to separate wildlife from your crops. Many times, I have found numerous animals trapped inside my farm, stepping on the crops and destroying them.
-Know your friend's friends. 9/10 times, a griefer is actually a player on your own friends' friends lists. They can join through your friend that is in the game.
-condense iron, gold, diamond, and lapis into blocks. It takes 9 units to make one block, potentially saving you several chests worth of space. This is especially useful when you've seen your share of caves and mines and have more iron than you can shake a stick at.
-Underwater building is NOT like Total Miner. In TM, an incorrect move can flood an entire floor of a building, causing you to have to fill it all back in, then delete the filler blocks to remove the water. In Minecraft, making a hole will allow a source block to flow in, but not permanently. As soon as you cover the hole up, the water quickly recedes.
- I believe it takes 5 arrows to kill a creeper, last I recalled. Keep this in mind when you go out for music disks, as creepers will turn around and try to blow up the skeleton/s that had hurt them. P.S: you collect music disks by making a skeleton kill a creeper.
-You can choose what times the game will auto save via the help options. Dont leave auto save on if you're going to walk away from your game, especially if the lobby is open. If its time to auto save, but you're away, it will initiate as soon as you return. The last thing you want is a griefer destroying your creations while youre "AFK", then returning to the game to have it auto save the damage.
-You cannot eat mushrooms by themselves.
- Don't ever make gold tools or armor. Gold is very weak, and serves a greater purpose as a powered rail
I hope these helped somebody, and please let me know if it did, so it's not out of vain for me. lol

Very true.
Uhhh, its a good thing I'm not writing the Official Strategy Guide.
Oh yeah, and there is sneaking. When you sneak, you don't fall off edges and you stay in one place while on a ladder. This is extremely helpful for horizontal building, like covering up lava.
When you seem to be trapped in a cave with monsters directly below you, try dropping gravel or sand on their heads. Two quick placements and when it drops it will suffocate the enemy and clear a path for you.
Use sneak mode to mine blocks while on a ladder. This is also a good way to mine straight up to the surface. So long as you don't mine into lava, your ladder will stop any caveins of gravel, sand or water.
Are you cornered by skeletons in a cave? Try digging around them or building a safe passage over their heads.
While roaming on the surface, use flint and steel to set pigs on fire. When they die, you get a cooked pork chop.
Skeletons may shoot further than us but we can shoot our arrows much faster. Line up your shot and quickly let off a stream of arrows at them. Keep in mind enemies bounce back when hit.
It's wise to always bring wood into a dungeon with you. It's wiser to bring saplings.
Mine with Reach. Often times people are tempted to get as close to the resource they are mining as they can when it is along the wall. I have found however that this often leaves you trapped and corned when you hear that telltale hissing noise from behind you. "Which way is he coming from?" "Do I dodge left or right?" Your survival is reduced to a coin flip. However if you leave space if front of you, not only can you usually see more of the area around you but there is always a safe direction to escape to, Forward.
Always Cook your meat. Taking the time to cook the meat before consuption grants a far greater hunger bonus then eating it raw. Raw meat can also cause illness (chicken in particular) which will cause you to have an overall negative impact on your hunger levels.
Zombie flesh beats starving. It may be disgusting, but when you're dying of hunger you may have no other option but to eat zombie. If you do though, it is recommended you eat more then one so that you will still have some food left over when you are done being sick.
keep 1 or 2 stacks of sand or gravel in your inventory at all times. can be used to easily climb cliffs or out of deep holes. make bridges across ravines. cross lava or water very easily. and best of all, easy to mine even without tools.
