Well i have found diamonds near the surface so they dont just spawn in the depths
Like I said before, depth is not relevant because a chunk goes up to the sky and down to bedrock. The number 4.123 is the average number of diamonds per chunk
Yeah, it only spawns in the bottom 17. Not sure what that person up there was talking about being able to find it at layer 40.
I did find diamond up in 40+ layers while making a coal and iron mine McAngusYoung, I'm not sure if it's really rare or not just found it near a pool of lava

Sounds like something is wrong with the world generation then. Diamond isn't supposed to be spawning any higher than Layer 17 in the map. Guess I found a new bug to report in the bug thread.

After reading 4-5 different posts and you on all of them. You seem to know everything and its really annoying. And half the time your wrong and you cant accept it so you keep arguing

I've been playing the PC version since Alpha and have never heard of or seen Diamond above the 17 lowest layers of the map without the help of mods or glitches. If it's spawning any higher, it's a glitch.

I suppose it is an genarating bug, I'll also post the bug too. Thanks for the wiki info!

If he seems to know everything. Then how could he be wrong half of the times?
It stands to reason that the spawn locations might have been given a little more flexibility given that the world size is....ahh...not perfect. For example, knowing that the world is going to generate chunks a player cannot mine or move into...they could have retooled certain spawns to compensate for that. Or the generator could be running into issues in trying to spawn the amount in a given area, sort of like how mobs spawns have certain issues. So, even though you have a lighted home, a mob can still spawn inside if the mobs group spawn location gives it no other recourse. Likewise, if the diamond spawn generator cannot spawn its correct amount, it might pick the next available location.
Not a thing you'd see often really...but still not impossible if the generator built into the game is designed to correct itself when criteria don't match up. I think that it does, given other information I've seen. Could still be a bug though. We all have to remember, though, that the initial design of the game was done by a single guy trying his best to see through a lot of possible, and existing, problems. I doubt the spawn generator is a thing of perfect majesty. Oh, I'm still massively impressed by it, even looking at it as though it were built by a team of people it still pretty smart.
So far, information about what is found on each world layer in the XBox edition has mostly (but not perfectly) matched the wiki data that originated from analysis of PC edition maps. In addition to only being 128 block tall (instead of 256), we've already found a few other discrepancies:
XBox top ocean block is layer 64, not 62
XBox bedrock is on layers 2 and 3, not 0 through 5 (actually, can't tell what if anything is on layers 0 and 1 on the XBox)
XBox lava lakes go up to and including layer 11, PC lava lakes stop at layer 10
This is enough for me to have some strong doubts about the accuracy of all the layer data from the PC (diamond data could well be off by a couple of layers, too).
I would love to see someone do a map analysis of layer resources (like the one on this page) using an XBox saved map (via a USB stick). We might be surprised what we find!
Yea I would like to know how many rails I can make if I use all of the iron/gold in my map. How big of a rollercoaster would that be? Im sure I would get the 500m acheivement. Is it possible to cover the entire surface in rails(if it was all flat land)? and why am I asking these questions?

Yeah there may be differences but I highy doubt Diamonds went from spawning in the bottom 17 layers to almost spawning at the surface.

Oh and if you think Diamond is supposed to spawn above layer 17, please go read this.
