So a few nights ago, someone joined by game -- someone I didn't recognize. I didn't mind, I wanted the experience of playing an open game.
Everything actually worked out great in the beginning... he was very, very helpful in my building of a large castle. He'd gather resources and help me build walls, and left the design up to me. Soon, one of his friends joined, who would mine the material.
This was outstanding. I had trepidation that strangers joining my game would grief me, but on the contrary, these two were essentially breaking their backs to get me what I needed, asking for nothing in return. Both were obviously old hands at Minecraft, very competent and savvy. I was delighted that I had two new Minecraft friends I was hoping to play with for some time to come. We started to stuff the workshop chests with supplies and building materials. I saw a side of Minecraft I never had before: that with a group of you working together, suddenly it is very possible to build extremely impressive projects quickly. I suggested that we share all our resources, yet have our own bedchambers (which we built) that were off-limits to each other, so we could have our own stashes and sanctuaries, which they agreed to.
Well, then the invasion happened. Five more folks joined, all buddies of these two. Right about this time it was late and I wanted to go to bed. So I said I'd keeep the server up so they could continue to play.
Now, I should have picked up on some real obvious warning signs this was gonna turn into a zoo. Some of these new guys were dumping lava next to us, flooding floors and dumping bricks. In short, screwing around and messing with each other and not building or gathering.
The next morning, I found the castle looked like a Frat House after Spring Break. Broken windows, busted walls, flooded floors, burned carpets, bricks and walls hither and yon cluttering up the castle, and worst of all, every last chest was now missing, all resources gone. Including the chests the supposedly off limits rooms.
What I am uncertain about is how to proceed here. I was thinking about posting a bunch of signs in the great hall warning that if this happened again, I'd boot everyone and turn the game private. But I also reasoned that is likely to alienate a lot of them, thinking I'm being a pushy a-hole telling them how to play, and naturally they have no obligation to play on my world. And maybe I'm taking this way too seriously, and just should figure that, if I'm playing public games, there's no private property and I should just chill and expect this.
I'd be interested in hearing your points of view on this....
You have to make a spawn jail. Where as soon as they spawn they are kept in it till you give the ok to come in. We had a tower that went as high as we could out of obsidian and no matter how they tried to get out they would fall to their death. Or the new one we are building is in the ground at bed rock lined with obsidian and maybe lava. This of course has to work with friends you trust to fairs your world which brings me to my second point. Don't make these guys just work for you. Let them build there own awesomeness in yiur world. this way theu feel threatened as much as you do if they mess around.

There's the rub. I felt almost like I wasn't entitled to yell at these guys because they are the ones who gathered a lot of the plundered resources themselves. But I worked on it too. But I have the ultimate trump -- if I get sick of it, I can just boot em and make it invite only.
What I REALLY wanted is a central base where everyone agrees to behave themselves, and the rest of the world is fair game. I iwish there was a way to set a certain area indestructable, unbuildable and chests only openable by the owners.
I was playing with some friends on one of their friends worlds, I built this huge tower and 3 days later he got bored and blew it up with TNT, I was pissed. I always play invite only on my worlds, and I only invite players I know will not cause problems.

It would be nice to make the central base idea- however, to create such a thing you would need a mature group of people that are entertained by building, and less destroying.

Can you do this? I've never been able to rename people on my Friends list. I sure would like to, however.
