I've seen a lot of posts about grinders / mobs and I'm just not sure I get it. I mean, I get the general idea of the grinder and what it does, but I'm not sure how to get it to work.
Hello I have actual built this same trap in my world! it works great. you build the base and the lava blades and build a huge room aboove where the mobs will spawn when dark. than you make a cheker floor where the mobs fall through to the rivers in step 6. took me about 3 days to make though and gona need to mine cobble stone for about a whole day lol

Currently on level 4 after starting shortly after I posted this topic. Good thing I had so much cobblestone, ugh
Lol, they aren't really useful. I'm sat in my collection pool and so far (twenty minutes) I've got 2 bits of string and 2 arrows.
Am I missing something?
I only put it up like... 70 blocks high or something...
Gotta make sure you light up a large area around the tower and any caves under it, otherwise your tower is competing with those areas for spawning. Most likely the other areas spawned all the mobs and capped out.

They wont spawn if you are too close, even at 70 blocks high, if your collection pool is 15 blocks away from their spawn pads they won't spawn. I have a gravity one 24 high, I just check it every minecraft morning I have a good amount of loot.
So, not 24 blocks vertically,, but 24 blocks horizontally?!!
I just wasted ages building this! GAH.
... Worst part is, loot only stays for 4 minutes.
My house (fortress. Obviously wasted my time :3) is not 24 blocks from the spawn pads :/
No just 24 in one direction( if you are standing 25 block directly under it they will spawn (or so i think, they drop when I stand under my glass floor to watch them die ). The only time the horizontal deal comes into play is if you are to close to the original spawn, I've read somewhere that you can't build grinders too close to the spawn. Try walking around for a bit away from the grinder and then come back to see if there is a bunch of loot. If so you are just standing to close to the spawn pads.
I have mine made of cobble but it shouldn't matter. I would go back up in the spawner ( on peaceful obviously lol ) and make sure you didn't leave a torch or any light in.
I finished mine about 20 minutes ago and it seems to be working like a charm. I used the guid and only did the 2 floors of spawn room but it seems to be pretty busy so far. It's about 29 blocks from the front door of my house so I can go check on it relatively quick. Boom!
I like EthosLab's design for a subterrarian mob farm. His tutorial is VERY good. I think it should work. I'm in the process of making it right now.

LOL well the lava could be giving off enough light to keep the mobs from spawning
